Spatial Characteristics of Population Activities in Suburban Villages Based on Cellphone Signaling Analysis

Abstract: There are frequent population flow and complex spatial structures in suburban villages. Understanding the spatial characteristics of population activities in suburban villages helps to coordinate the relationship between urban and rural areas and guide the development of suburban villages and the formulation of sound policies. Taking the rural area of Qin and Han New City as the research object, this paper constructs a population time-space analysis framework of “population attribute-activity characteristics-s… Show more

“…Presently, big data are widely used in urban mobility studies to examine the pattern of urban population spatiotemporal dynamics. However, most of these studies have been conducted in large cities, and small cities are rarely examined [1]. Small cities are an important part of the urbanization process and they have begun to face "urban diseases" in China, such as traffic congestion (Figure 1) [2,3], environment pollution [4], lack of infrastructure [5,6], and so forth.…”

“…Wang et al [31], Kang et al [32], and Yao et al [33] analyzed the classification of urban functions and the identification of urban land use through Baidu heat map and POI data. Zhou et al [1], based on the characteristics of the population activity curve, used a K-means aggregation At present, urban studies about spatiotemporal population activities can be divided into six categories: (1) Studies on temporal and spatial characteristics of population behavior. Ma et al [7], Kim et al [8], and Goulet-Langlois et al [9] studied the spatiotemporal travel patterns derived from smart-card data.…”

“…Combined with relevant research findings, the construction of network hierarchy at different levels raises different requirements for data sensitivity and accuracy, and more dynamic, continuous and accurate population flow information is required for suburban villages. The mobile phone signaling data can accurately measure the time-space behaviors of the suburban population [1], [42], [43]. Due to various advantages such as vector, large sample, full coverage, and continuous space-time attributes, it has been extensively used in regional urban system research and population flow characteristics analysis [44].…”

“…With frequent urban-rural contact, diverse travel destinations, and complex spatial characteristics [1], production and life in suburban villages are significantly influenced by economic production, cultural activities and public services of central cities [2]. According to the stage urbanization theory, urban development generally experiences four stages including urbanization, suburbanization, reverse urbanization and re-urbanization [3].…”
