The ongoing urban spatial transformation contributes to a more intricate and varied spatiotemporal correlation pattern between metropolitan expansion and the migrant population. In this study, the coupled coordination model (CCD) is applied to enable the quantification of the spatiotemporal correlation index of metropolitan expansion and migrant population from 2010 to 2020. Moreover, various correlation patterns are identified in this research, and the multiscale geographical weighted regression model (MGWR) is employed to examine the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the influencing factors that contribute to this correlation. The research findings reveal the following insights: (1) The built-up areas increased twofold between 2010 and 2020, with an evident tendency toward southward expansion. In addition, population migration indicates slow migration in the inner metropolitan area and accelerated migration in the outer metropolitan area. The correlation between metropolitan expansion and migrant population follows a central–peripheral layer pattern that is characterized by a low-high-low progression. (2) While the balanced development of public services has somewhat decreased the differentiation patterns observed, the adjustments made to economic growth, employment, and residential markets have intensified the differentiation of spatiotemporal correlation characteristics between the metropolitan expansion and migrant population. (3) This study demonstrates that the Chengdu metropolitan area is transitioning from a rapid development stage driven by structuralism to a human-oriented new urbanization stage. This shift is evident through the clear stage pattern and central–peripheral layer features observed. Through the scientific planning of industry and public service layouts, the promotion of integration employment, residential markets, and the facilitation of urban–rural transformation can be achieved. Implementing these strategies can elevate the standard of human-oriented urban spatial governance, achieve coordinated and balanced development between built-up and residential spaces, and advance the high-quality, sustainable, and inclusive development of metropolitan areas.

The metropolitan area is the inevitable trend of urbanization towards an advanced form. The pattern of urban radiation is the key to building a metro area and promoting high-quality regional development. In order to effectively promote the rationalization of metropolitan areas and regional integration development, this paper takes the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region as an example, calculates the intensity of city centrality (ICC) based on the statistical data, and explores the radiation pattern and spatial relationship of cities at different levels by using methods such as the extended breaking point model and the hierarchical Voronoi diagram. The research results show that: (1) The ICC in the YRD shows a spatial pattern of “high in the east and low in the west, high in the middle and low in the north and south”. (2) The ICC value of “strong-strong” adjacent cities shows the tendency of the radiation range to shrink and that the radiation direction is perpendicular to both sides. The “strong-weak” adjacent cities’ radiation range and direction show an expansion–contraction trend. The radiation range and direction of “weak-weak” adjacent cities exhibit disorder. (3) Because the ICC is hierarchical, urban radiation is a polycentric, nested circle structure. Shanghai is the first-level center, and Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Hefei, and Xuzhou are the second-level centers. (4) The sequence of the spatial morphological complexity and stability in each circle, from complex to simple, is the Hangzhou circle, the Shanghai circle, the Xuzhou circle, the Hefei circle, and the Nanjing circle. The spatial morphological characteristics of the Ningbo circle do not meet the morphological dimension conditions. The study of the polycentric circle structure is of practical significance for the enhancement of the radiation driving effect of the central city and the expansion and improvement of the metropolitan area.

Multi-Dimensional Urbanization Coordinated Evolution Process and Ecological Risk Response in the Yangtze River Delta

The dislocated development of population, land, and economy will disturb the urban system, cause ecological risk problems, and ultimately affect regional habitat and quality development. Based on social statistics and nighttime lighting data from 2000 to 2018, we used mathematical statistics and spatial analysis methods to analyze the change process of urbanization’s coupling coordination degree and ecological risk response pattern in the Yangtze River Delta. Results show that: ① From 2000 to 2018, the coupling coordination degree of urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta increased, with high values in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou regions. ② The ecological risk in the Yangtze River Delta weakened, and the vulnerability and disturbance of landscape components together constitute the spatial differentiation pattern of regional ecological risk, which presented homogeneous aggregation and heterogeneous isolation. ③ The overall ecological stress of urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta decreased. ④ The population aggregation degree, socio-economic development level and built-up area expansion trend contributed to the spatiotemporal differentiation of urbanization’s ecological risks through the synergistic effects of factor concentration and diffusion, population quality cultivation and improvement, technological progress and dispersion, industrial structure adjustment and upgrading. This study can provide a reference for regional urbanization to deal with ecological risks reasonably and achieve high-quality development.
