The Yanjiang-Yitong’ansha Fault Zone (YYFZ) traverses the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB) and plays an essential role in basin formation and hydrocarbon accumulation in the PRMB. Because of the lack of seismic data, its distribution, evolution, and effect on the basin evolution in the Cenozoic are poorly known. Based on a detailed interpretation of 3D multi-channel seismic data and previous research results, the YYFZ was identified and characterized. It comprises a series of NW-trending strike-slip faults that exhibit horsetail and en echelon structures in the map view and flower-like or Y-shaped structures in the profile view. By comprehensively analyzing the Paleogene migration of depocenters, activity characteristics of the YYFZ-related faults, and the relationships between faults and sedimentary sequences along the YYFZ, we propose the sinistral motion of the YYFZ initiated at about 35 Ma. The YYFZ served as a transfer zone during the intense rifting in the PRMB from 65 to 35 Ma. Then due to the combined effect of the Indian-Eurasian collision to the west, the Pacific subduction to the east, and the proto-SCS slab-pull to the south, it became a sinistral transtensional fault from 35 Ma to 16.5 Ma. Our results highlight the significant role of the NW-trending fault systems in the basin formation and the regional tectonic evolution of the PRMB.

Multiple sediment source infill in a low-accommodation basin: implications for the late Paleozoic sediment routing system in the southeastern Ordos Basin

Late Paleozoic strata in the southeastern Ordos Basin comprise targeted reservoirs for tight gas exploration. As a typical intracratonic basin, the Ordos Basin is characterized by low-accommodation space and a complex sediment infilling process, which attracts much attention. During the early Permian, the southeast area was fed by sediments from multiple sediment sources, which makes it difficult to identify the pinch-out of the sand bodies and reconstruct the sediment routing system. In this study, we reconstruct the paleo-topography of the late Paleozoic setting using high-resolution 2D and 3D seismic data. Thus, we identify two types of topography: the eastern block is presented as a semiclosed depression, and the western block is observed as a flat platform. Based on detrital zircon U–Pb data and heavy mineral assemblages, we reconstruct the provenance area and show that early Permian sediments originate from the northern margin of the Ordos Basin and from the northern Qinling orogenic belt in the south. By integrating the trace element contents, carbon and oxygen isotope data and sedimentary structure from core samples, we can observe the paleoenvironment and the corresponding facies associations in these blocks. The eastern block was infilled by a prograding delta; the western block was infilled by a tide-dominated delta or a wavy-dominated delta. By using stratigraphic forward modelling, we find that most sediments in the semiclosed setting are progradational and intensely interacted. In contrast, the sediments in the western block present an open setting, infilled and gently interacted. The fine-grained deposits were not easily preserved due to tidal or wave reworking processes in the shallow-water marine setting, and they were transported into deep-water areas. Furthermore, to explore the dominant factors in a pattern of fluvial–deltaic sand bodies formed in the low-accommodation basin, we rebuild the sediment routing system parameters and plot them on a bubble chart. According to the fitness between the depositional volume and the above parameters, we determine the key factors in the routing systems that formed. The results show that the sediment supply has a high relevance to the depositional volume in a semiclosed setting, such as the eastern block, while the terrain height may drive sedimentation in an open marine setting, such as the western block. We demonstrate that two different infill patterns and different sand-body stacking patterns with multiple sediment sources in a low-accommodation basin may serve as a model for similar settings.

Source‐to‐sink analysis examines the effects of source areas and basin (sink) dynamics on the generation, transport, composition, distribution and deposition of sediment in modern and ancient sedimentary systems. Detrital zircon, as one of the most stable detrital minerals, its U–Pb geochronology and geochemistry is pivotal for sedimentary provenance analysis and reconstructing palaeogeography. The South China Sea (SCS), as the largest marginal sea in the Southeast Asia, is closely related to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of Chinese rivers. In this study, we mainly collect published detrital zircon of Cenozoic sediments in the SCS (include Hainan and Taiwan Islands). These detrital zircon were concentrated on Cenozoic multiple episodic rift basins in the northern part of the SCS. A total of 21,760 detrital zircon U–Pb data from 293 samples and 995 detrital zircon Lu‐Hf isotope data from 22 samples were collected in this dataset, with the main study epochs being the Palaeogene and Neogene. Best ages of these grains are range from 4,691 to 10 Ma and more than half of them within age less than 500 Ma. The 176Hf/177Hf ratios of the SCS samples ranging from 0.280509 to 0.28306 and the εHf(t) values from −63.8 to 24.6. The main age group of the SCS Cenozoic sediments were at 130–95 Ma, 175–130 Ma and 265–230 Ma. The detrital zircon U–Pb age and Lu–Hf isotope data contained in this dataset is an important geological record of the sedimentary and tectonic evolution of the SCS and the evolution of rivers such as the ancient Pearl River and the ancient Red River, which can provide a basis and important clues or exploring the source of sediments in the SCS, the dynamical processes of basin evolution, the evolution of the coastal drainage system and the tectonic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.
