Spatial and temporal variability of groundwater quality of an Algerian aquifer: the case of Soummam Wadi

Abstract: Five-year monitoring of physicochemical parameters was performed with two campaigns in low and high water periods of the Lower Soummam catchment. Data from 18 wells were processed by multivariate statistical tools in order to identify the principal factors influencing groundwater chemistry. Two matrices of 14 and 8 physicochemical parameters with 18 groundwater samples collected in wells were obtained. The correlation matrix showed strong associations between nine variables: K + , Ca 2+ , Na + , SO 4 2− , Cl −… Show more

“…According to previous works [11,15,16], the watershed is formed by the Oligocene on the left bank, crossed by lower Cretaceous formations, while the lower Miocene appears in the downstream part. Along the river, large alluvial terraces V C 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers lining usually the foot of the slopes are observed, except in the region of Sidi-Aich.…”

“…The transport of these sediments to the outflow occurs mainly during periods of severe flooding. To better understand and monitor the progress of suspended particles in streams in areas with humid Mediterranean climate, the work has focused on the Soumman Wadi, since it is considered as the third major river in Algeria .…”

“…1.5 mS cm −1 (Table 1). EC of ground water generally depends upon temperature, concentration and ions present in it (Agbalagba et al 2011;Benhamiche et al 2015). A high EC of water shows the occurrence of the high amount of dissolved inorganic ions (Harilal et al 2004).…”
