Evapotranspiration is a key factor in regional hydrological processes and water resources management. Long‐term variation of evapotranspiration affects the regional climate wet/dry tendency and agricultural production profoundly. Thus, reference evapotranspiration (ET0) values for 46 meteorological stations in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) were calculated for 1957–2014 using the FAO‐Penman–Monteith (FAO‐PM) method. The variation patterns of ET0 values were determined based on the principal component analysis (PCA) method. In addition, the methods of cross wavelet transform (CWT), Kendall tau‐b correlation coefficient determination and cross‐correlation method were applied in the assessment of the correlation between ET0 values and large‐scale climate oscillations, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the Oceanic Niño3.4 Sea Surface Temperature Index (NINO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Annual ET0 patterns for three dominant geographic subregions of the YRD (the southeastern, northwestern and mid‐eastern) were determined. There were only several discontinuous lower timescale bands between the three change patterns of annual ET0 and climate oscillations. In seasonal scale, the temporal patterns of ET0 changed simultaneously with the NAO, NINO and PDO in spring, the PDO in summer and the NAO in winter. The monthly ET0 was mostly influenced by the NAO and IOD in January, the IOD in February, the IOD and NINO in March, the NINO in June, the PDO in July to October, the NINO, IOD and NAO in October and the NINO in December. The lag times for the ET0 changes were about 0–5 months for the NAO and NINO, 1–2 months for the PDO and 4 months for the IOD.

Owing to the crucial environmental and hydrological functions of river systems and intensive human disturbance, further investigations of their change patterns and flood control functions are urgently needed. The Rapidly Urbanized Taihu Basin (RUTB) was selected as the study region to investigate changes in the river networks, the relationship between changes in river systems and urbanization, and the changes in the static drainage storage capacity (SC) and regulation capacity (RC) from the 1980s to the 2010s. The results indicated that the total drainage density in RUTB decreased by 10.17%. For the first-, second-, and third-order rivers, the changes are +7.61%, −14.35%, and −17.84%, respectively. Spatially, the change pattern of the third-order river drainage density displayed significant spatial clustering. The ratio of main to tributary river length (Rmt) was increased from 0.31 in the 1980s to 0.39 in the 2010s. Spatially, the drastic increases were found in the south-east of Wu-Cheng-Xi-Yu, the east of Yang-Cheng-Dian-Mao, and the central southern part of Hang-Jia-Hu. Results moreover show that urbanization has the greatest influence on the third-order drainage density, especially around the secondary and rapidly developing cities. The demand for flood control has led to a slight increase in the density of main rivers. The values of SC and RC decreased by 0.69% and 40.61% in RUTB, respectively. These changes were mainly concentrated around the major cities and urban corridors. The decrease in SC was caused by the decay of the river system, and the reduction in RC was caused by a combination of river system degradation and increase in ordinary water levels.

Large amounts of aerosol particles suspended in the atmosphere pose a serious challenge to the climate and human health. In this study, we produced a dataset through merging the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometers (MODIS) Collection 6.1 3-km resolution Dark Target aerosol optical depth (DT AOD) with the 10-km resolution Deep Blue aerosol optical depth (DB AOD) data by linear regression and made use of it to unravel the spatiotemporal characteristics of aerosols over the Pan Yangtze River Delta (PYRD) region from 2014 to 2017. Then, the geographical detector method and multiple linear regression analysis were employed to investigate the contributions of influencing factors. Results indicate that: (1) compared to the original Terra DT and Aqua DT AOD data, the average daily spatial coverage of the merged AOD data increased by 94% and 132%, respectively; (2) the values of four-year average AOD were high in the north-east and low in the south-west of the PYRD; (3) the annual average AOD showed a decreasing trend from 2014 to 2017 while the seasonal average AOD reached its maximum in spring; and that (4) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and slope contributed most to the spatial distribution of AOD, followed by precipitation and population density. Our study highlights the spatiotemporal variability of aerosol optical depth and the contributions of different factors over this large geographical area in the four-year period, and can, therefore, provide useful insights into the air pollution control for decision makers.
