Spatial and temporal succession of bacterial communities in three artificial fishponds

Abstract: Fishponds are artificial yet dynamic environments. Microbes play a vital role in the conversion and metabolism of organic matter in aquaculture environments such as fishponds. Changes in bacterial community composition in three fishponds over a 5‐month period were investigated by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene through Illumina Miseq. A total of 2,195,879 sequences and 9,975 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained. Further analysis showed that the dominant phyla in three ponds were similar, including Pro… Show more

“…Thus, no evidence indicates that polyculture systems can increase the risk of blooming. Cyanobacteria also maintained a low level in a nile tilapia pond (Song et al, 2019). At the genus level, unclassified genera were the most abundant in all the samples, accounting for 32.20%, 31.24%, 38.25% and 28.91% of the total sequences from the water.…”

“…Amplicon sequencing of single gene fragments is widely used for studying biodiversity and community compositions, based on reference databases and relative abundance of the target genes. It can be conveniently applied to track tempo-spatial variations of population and community structures, resulting from genetic and/or environmental changes (Beser et al 2017; Costello et al 2009; Gous et al 2019; McNamara et al 2020; Pochon et al 2013; Song et al 2019; Xu et al 2012). Accumulated amplicon sequences of various samples also provide growing databases for future research.…”

“…Sediment is both a sink and a source of pollutants (Zoppini et al 2020). Microbial resources are the most abundant in the sediments, especially bacterial microorganisms, which serve as a resource pool for ecological restoration and a pathogen reservoir for bacterial diseases (Ape et al 2019;Song et al 2019). Bacteria not only play an important role in the circulation of sediments, but also exert a non-negligible influence on the degradation and transformation of pollutants from the external environment (Zhang 2016).…”
