Spatial and Temporal Packet Recovery Schemes for DVB-H Systems through IP-Relay Wireless Networks

Abstract: Abstract-The DVB-H standard has been defined to provide digital video broadcast to mobile handheld devices. However, without a request channel, a handheld device may encounter data loss and thus it requires an additional recovery architecture to relieve this problem. In this paper, we follow the DVB-IPDC standard and propose combining a DVB-H system with an IPrelay wireless network. A handheld device losing DVB-H data can thus request the relay network for retransmission. Under this architecture, we identify t… Show more

“…Observations (1), (2), and (3) are identical to the observations in the experiment of Section 6.1. Because the BS is allowed to broadcast more coded packets when the˛value grows, more lost DVB-H packets can be recovered, which results in observation (4). The reason of observation (5) is explained as follows: When the˛value grows, there is a good possibility that our PEN algorithm can select the lost DVB-H packets with smaller profit, especially when they are requested by more HDs.…”

“…In this case, data retransmission is necessary. Although DVB-H provides a return channel for HDs to feedback some information, Yang et al [4] point out that it has two major drawbacks to use this return channel for data retransmission. First, the return channel is quite narrow and in through an IEEE 802.11 network.…”

“…DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting -Handheld), the specification for bringing broadcast services to battery-powered Mobile Handsets (MHs), was formally adopted as an ETSI standard in November 2004 [1]. However, due to the wireless channel characteristic and wireless broadcast properties, MHs are vulnerable to lose packets in a wireless environment [2,3]. Some studies are trying to deal with the DVB-H data loss problem, [4] adopts a cellular network to transmit repair data, [5] proposes an FEC scheme to deliver DVB-H lost packets to improve transmission efficiency, and [6] integrates DVB-H with a 3G network to transmit data for the recovery purpose.…”

“…However, owing to the broadcast behavior, HDs could be vulnerable to data loss [2], [3]. Although DVB-H provides a return channel for HDs to feedback some information, it is inefficient to use such a channel to handle data retransmissions due to two reasons [4]. First, the return channel is usually narrow and cannot carry much information.…”
