Spatial and temporal evolution of lead isotope ratios in the North Atlantic Ocean between 1981 and 1989

Abstract: Lead concentrations and isotope ratios were measured in North Atlantic surface water samples collected in 1981 (29°–79°N, 6°E–49°W) and in 1989 (23°–39°N, 29°–68°W). In the early 1980s, 206Pb/207Pb ratios in the North African Basin averaged 1.193 ± 0.005 (1 σ). Similar radiogenic ratios within the level of analytical precision (average 0.29%) were found in the Labrador and Iceland Basins (1.198 ± 0.006) and in the Norwegian Sea (1.196 ± 0.008). These radiogenic mixed layer signatures along with atmospheric glo… Show more

“…5 and 6). During the 1970s to early 1990s, the predominant source of Pb to the North Atlantic was US leaded gasoline (Weiss et al, 2003;Martin et al, 1993;Veron et al, 1999), which was reflected in the high 206 Pb / 207 Pb isotope ratios (∼ 1.20).…”

“…Of relevance to this study ( Fig. 1), surface Pb concentrations ([Pb]) were measured in 1981 (TTO, Weiss et al, 2003), 1989 (Atlantis II 123, this work; JGOFS, Martin et al, 1993), 1993(IOC-2, Veron et al, 1999, and 1999 (Endeavor 328, Noble et al, 2015, and this work). More recent campaigns through the GEOTRACES program occurred in 2010 (GA02, Schlitzer et al, 2018) and 2010/2011(GA03, Noble et al, 2015.…”

“…The relatively low [Pb] and similar isotope ratios contrast sharply with surface water measurements from the previous century ( Figures 5, 6). During the 1970s -early 1990s, the predominant source of Pb to the North Atlantic was U.S. leaded gasoline (Weiss et al, 2003;Martin et al, 1993;5 Veron et al, 1999), which was reflected in the high 206 Pb/ 207 Pb isotope ratios (~1.20).…”

“…As a result, far less Pb has been mobilized into the atmosphere and less deposited in remote places such as the open ocean. “…The Atlantic cruise in June-July 2008 (Figs. 1 and 2) occupied the Bermuda-Atlantic Time Series (BATS; 31°50′ N, 64°10′ W) station that was selected for its stratified, oligotrophic surface waters (low nutrient, low bioactive trace elements, low particle concentrations) and the wealth of existing TEI data (e.g., Weiss et al 2003;Sedwick et al 2005). An additional station at the shelf break off the eastern USA coast (37°02′ N, 74°25′ W) was occupied to provide a contrasting environment with higher particle abundance and TEI concentrations, particularly short-lived radionuclides.…”
