Floating objects facilitate the dispersal of marine and terrestrial species but also represent a major environmental hazard in the case of anthropogenic plastic litter. They can be found throughout the world's oceans but information on their abundance and the spatio-temporal dynamics is scarce for many regions of the world. This information, however, is essential to evaluate the ecological role of floating objects. Herein, we report the results from a ship-based visual survey on the abundance and composition of flotsam in the German Bight (North Sea) during the years 2006 to 2008. The aim of this study was to identify potential sources of floating objects and to relate spatio-temporal density variations to environmental conditions. Three major flotsam categories were identified: buoyant seaweed (mainly fucoid brown algae), natural wood and anthropogenic debris. Densities of these floating objects in the German Bight were similar to those reported from other coastal regions of the world. Temporal variations in flotsam densities are probably the result of seasonal growth cycles of seaweeds and fluctuating river runoff (wood). Higher abundances were often found in areas where coastal fronts and eddies develop during calm weather conditions. Accordingly, flotsam densities were often higher in the inner German Bight than in areas farther offshore. Import of floating objects and retention times in the German Bight are influenced by wind force and direction. Our results indicate that a substantial amount of floating objects is of coastal origin or introduced into the German Bight from western source areas such as the British Channel. Rapid transport of floating objects through the German Bight is driven by strong westerly winds and likely facilitates dispersal of associated organisms and gene flow among distant populations.

A bibliographic revision on the records of the distribution of the polychaete Cistenides elhersi, obtained during different CIMAR Fjord cruises (50 m), was conducted in order to test the potential effects of salinity gradients and temperature on the vertical distribution of benthic estuarine fauna. Aditionally, a new record of C. elhersi is reported in low salinity (25 psu) shallow waters of Skyring Sound ((52°33'16" S, 71°51'34" W; 0.3 to 2 m depth) Magellan region, with presence of the grass Ruppia filifolia. This record suggest the eurybathic, euryhaline and eurythermal of this polychaete in the austral zone of Chile. Additional studies are suggested in order to identify other ecological services provided by seagrass beds.Key words: estuaries, Polychaeta, Fjord benthos, ruppia, Cimar-Fiordo, subantarctic wetland. RESUMENA objeto de analizar los impactos potenciales que podrían tener los gradientes de salinidad, así como los distintos regímenes térmicos sobre la distribución batimétrica de la fauna bentónica estuarina en la zona austral de Chile, se desarrolló una revisión bibliográfica sobre los hallazgos del poliqueto Cistenides elhersi recolectados en diferentes cruceros Cimar Fiordo. Se consideraron las características oceanográficas de las estaciones con profundidades mayores a 50 m, y se adicionaron datos nuevos obtenidos en un sector de baja salinidad (25 psu) y somero del Seno Skyring (52°33'16" S, 71°51'34" W; 0,3 a 2 m profundidad), Región de Magallanes, donde predomina una pradera del pasto acuático ruppia filifolia. Los datos analizados en forma conjunta permiten proponer que C. elhersi muestra eurihalinidad, euritermia y euribatía. Se proporcionan antecedentes complementarios sobre la abundancia del poliqueto, tamaño y ubicación dentro de la matriz del pasto. Se destaca la necesidad de desarrollar nuevos estudios para identificar otro tipo servicios ecológicos prestados por esta pradera de r. filifolia.

RESUMEN.Durante octubre-noviembre de 2009 se realizó un crucero oceanográfico entre 50 y 53°S de Chile austral, en las cercanías del glaciar Campos de Hielo Sur. Las estaciones cercanas al glaciar presentaron baja temperatura (1-3ºC) y salinidad (< 25), y alta estabilidad (frecuencia de Brunt-Väisälä N > 0,1 ciclos s -1 ). Los principales taxa del ictioplancton fueron huevos y larvas de sardina fueguina Sprattus fuegensis, pez hacha Maurolicus parvipinnis, Macrouridae y merluza austral Merluccius australis. El desove principal de S. fuegensis (~ 8000 huevos 10 m -2 ) ocurrió en zonas mezcladas de la plataforma continental adyacente, mientras que el desove de M. parvipinnis ocurrió en canales intermedios asociado a valores intermedios de estabilidad (N~0,06 ciclos s -1 ). Se observó una nula o baja abundancia de huevos y larvas de peces en las cercanías del glaciar, y la abundancia de huevos de M. parvipinnis estuvo relacionada positivamente con la temperatura y salinidad de la columna de agua y negativamente con la estabilidad de la columna de agua. Además, hubo una relación negativa entre la densidad del agua de mar y el diámetro de los huevos de S. fuegensis. La relación entre deshielo e ictioplancton podría tener consecuencias en el transporte advectivo y mortalidad masiva de huevos y larvas de peces y el acople pelágico-bentónico en la Patagonia austral de Chile. Como el cambio climático global ha incrementado los deshielos de glaciares en latitudes altas, y el aumento del ingreso de aguas de baja temperatura y salinidad podría tener consecuencias en el ictioplancton de la Patagonia chilena. Palabras clave: estratificación, distribución, ictioplancton, Campo de Hielo Sur, sur de Chile. ) occurred in mixed zones of the adjacent continental shelf, whereas the spawning of M. parvipinnis occurred in intermediate channels associated with medium stability values (N~0.06 cycles s -1 ). Fish egg and larval abundances were null or scarce near the glacier, and the abundance of M. parvipinnis eggs was positively related to the temperature and salinity of the water column, and negatively related to water column stability. Moreover, a negative relationship was observed between seawater density and the diameter of S. fuegensis eggs. The relation between ice melting and ichthyoplankton may have consequences for advective transport and mass mortality of fish eggs and larvae, as well as pelagic-benthic coupling in the Chilean South Patagonia. Global climate change has increased glacier ice melting at high latitudes, and the increased entry of colder, less saline waters in coastal areas may have consequences for the ichthyoplankton in the Chilean Patagonia.
