Spatial and temporal changes in dry-snow line altitude on the Antarctic Peninsula

Abstract: Drastic changes were detected in glacial systems of the Antarctic Peninsula in the last decades. The observed phenomena comprise the disintegration of ice shelves, acceleration and thinning of glaciers, and retreat of glacier fronts. However, due to the lack of consistent systematic observations in particular of the higher parts of the glacial systems, it is difficult to predict further responses of the Antarctic Peninsula glaciers to climatic change. The present paper analyses spatial and temporal variations … Show more

“…As can be seen in Figure 10, σ 0 drops rapidly from −5 dB to −10 dB in the transition, suggesting that the threshold is reasonable within a range. A lower threshold of −8 dB was used by Arigony-Neto et al [8,34]. The result was supported by the higher winter σ 0 with the increased summer melting days derived by SSM/I data (see in Figures 7b and 10).…”

“…It is an essential part of the world's environmental system-the Antarctic region not only sends out climate signals that affect global climate, but also absorbs global climatic signals (e.g. McConell et al 2007;Arigony-Neto et al 2009). With the addition of human-induced disturbances such climatic impacts may also affect the physiology, ecology and adaptive responses of the continent's living forms (Luz et al 2006;Miranda-Filho et al 2007;Cipro et al 2011).…”
