Spathaspora piracicabensis f. a., sp. nov., a d-xylose-fermenting yeast species isolated from rotting wood in Brazil

Abstract: Two strains of a novel yeast species were isolated from rotting wood of an ornamental tree (purple quaresmeira, Tibouchina granulosa, Melastomataceae) in an Atlantic Rainforest area in Brazil. Analysis of the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-5.8S) region and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that this species belongs to the Spathaspora clade, and is phylogenetically related to Spathaspora brasiliensis, Candida materiae and Sp. girioi. The novel species ferments D-xylose, … Show more

“…passalidarum [50][51][52][53], and Sp. piracicabensis are other species described as able to perform this activity [54]. The hydrolysis reaction of the lignocellulose biomass is conducted first through a pretreatment that can be mechanical, chemical, or heat-based.…”

The prospection of species in Brazilian ecosystems has focused mainly on Atlantic Rainforest, and other few studies have been conducted on Cerrado ecosystem and Amazonian Forest sites [71].…”

“…suhii and Sp. xylofermentans were introduced. These were from rotting wood (Cadete et al 2009(Cadete et al , 2013Lopes et al 2016;Morais et al 2017;Varize et al 2018) and Sp. allomyrinae from insects (Wang et al 2016).…”

“…allomyrinae from insects (Wang et al 2016). Spathaspora has been shown to be a polyphyletic group, containing members placed throughout the larger Spathaspora/Candida albicans/Lodderomyces clade of Debaryomycetaceae (Morais et al 2017;Varize et al 2018). Several Candida species, such as C. blackwellae, C. jeffriesii, C. lyxosophila, C. materiae, C. parablackwellae and C. subhashii, are closely related to Spathaspora, based on a phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the nuclear 28S rDNA (nuc 28S) sequences (Cadete et al 2013;Daniel et al 2014;Morais et al 2017;Varize et al 2018).…”
