Spasmogenic and Potentiating Actions of Some Amino Acids on the Guinea‐pig Myometrium

Abstract: I Thirty-three amino acids were applied separately in concentrations of 2 to 10 mM to guinea-pig uterine horns in vitro at pH 7.4. About half the acids regularly produced contractions. 2 Glycine and the straight-chain L-a-amino acids up to norleucine were active (longer ones not tested); D-isomers were less potent or inactive in these concentrations. “…The most potent one was stated to be N-benzylvaline (Na salt), which was claimed to intensify contractions at concentrations of the order of 10-19 M, or to cause spasm at 10-13 M. Since a number of common amino acids at much higher concentrations have recently been shown to stimulate the uterus (Bedwani, Ishizawa, Pickles & Suwankrughasn, 1977) conditions were kept constant.
