Spark Plasma Synthesis and Sintering of Superconducting MgB2-Based Materials

Abstract: Superconducting (SC) and mechanical properties of spark plasma (or SPS) produced MgB2 –based materials allow their efficient applications in fault current limiters, superconducting electromotors, pumps, generators, magnetic bearings, etc. The synthesized from Mg and B at 50 MPa, 1050 °C for 30 min material has a density of 2.52 g/cm3, critical current density, jc = 7.1•105 A/cm2 at 10 K , 5.4 •105 A/cm2 at 20 K, and 9•104 A/cm2 at 35 K in zero magnetic field; at 20 K its field of irreversibility Birr(20)=7 T a… Show more

“…The decomposition was observed to intensify when the sintering temperature was increased above 850 °C. However, compared to the reported literature [ 31 ], the effect of the low proportions of the formed secondary phase was seen in the improvement of the flux pinning characteristics due to the refinement of the grains, which was articulated later in the sample microstructure.…”

“…The samples were prepared at 600, 800, and 1050 • C under 0.1 MPa pressure in Ar (pressureless synthesis, PL), elevated pressure of 30 MPa (hot pressing, HotP) in contact with hexagonal BN and spark plasma sintering (50 MPa, SPS) [5] in contact with graphite and high quasi-hydrostatic (2 GPa, HP) [9] See http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/rights/index.html for more information. of the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement and SEM with microprobe X-ray and Auger spectroscope (JAMP-9500F).…”

“…Eisterer [5]. The discussed MgB 2 -based materials demonstrate a high superconducting performance and an enhanced connectivity between the superconducting grains [6] which is much higher than that reported elsewhere (usually less than 50%) [7].…”

“…The lower temperatures of these processes make it difficult to sinter MgB2 at temperatures near the melting point, necessitating the use of additional methods such as hot pressing [29,30], hot isostatic pressing [31,32], and spark plasma sintering [33][34][35] to achieve dense and well-connected grain boundaries in ex-situ MgB2 bulks and wires.…”
