Sparfloxacin – Cu(ii) – aromatic heterocyclic complexes: synthesis, characterization and in vitro anticancer evaluation

Abstract: Two new copper(II) complexes of sparfloxacin (sf), [Cu(Hsf)(HPB)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (1) and [Cu(Hsf)(PBT)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (2) (where HPB = 2-(2’-pyridyl)benzimidazole, PBT = 2-(4’-pyridyl) benzothiazole), have been synthesized and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques....

“…The production of ROS is closely related to mitochondria. 47 ROS are the by-products of cellular physiological and biochemical reactions, and the overproduction of ROS has been reported to cause oxidative stress, which can lead to cytotoxicity. 48 The production of intracellular ROS is a major cause of oxidative damage and also a major cause of transition metal complex-induced apoptosis.…”

“…Moreover, complex II72 showed selectivity for cancer cells, since its toxicity toward normal LO2 cells was significantly lower than that of the tumor cells, indicating that complex II72 might be a potential antitumor drug. Eca-109 cells were the most sensitive to complex II72 (IC 50 = 14.1 ± 0.5 μM) [ 174 ].…”

“…The anticancer mechanism of complex 3 in the 3@F127 system was evaluated because of the good in vivo anticancer effect of the 3@F127 system. Numerous reports have shown that copper complexes can exert their cytotoxic effects by activating apoptosis; [47][48][49][50] hence, and the apoptotic pathway was investigated. The apoptosis pathway was assessed using a flow cytometric assay.…”
