ObjectivesThis study explores the relationship between the perception of the learning environment and self-directed learning (SDL) ability among nursing undergraduates.Design, setting and participantsA cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2020 with 1096 junior and senior undergraduate nursing students (aged 16–22) from Wannan Medical College in Anhui Province, China.Outcome measuresThe Chinese version of the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure questionnaire and a validated Chinese version of college students’ SDL ability scale were used to assess students’ perceptions about their learning environment and their SDL ability. Canonical correlation analysis was performed to evaluate their correlation.ResultsThe total score for the learning environment was 120.60 (scoring rate: 60.30%), and the score for SDL ability was 89.25 (scoring rate: 63.75%). Analysis indicated that the first canonical correlation coefficient was 0.701 and the contribution rate was 94.26%. The perception of the learning environment was mainly determined by students’ perception of learning (SPL) and academic self-perceptions (SASP), with SDL ability mainly determined by self-management ability and cooperative learning ability. SPL and SASP were positively correlated with self-management ability and cooperative learning ability. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that SPL, SASP, students’ perceptions of atmosphere and students’ social self-perceptions had a significant impact on SDL ability.ConclusionsThe SDL ability of nursing undergraduates was not high. SPL and SASP were positively correlated with self-management ability and cooperative learning ability. Nursing educators can improve students’ SDL ability by changing their learning environment, using, for example, new student-centred teaching methods.

Objectives: To assess medical students’ perceptions regarding learning, teachers, academics, atmosphere at campus and social self-perceptions at Dow University of Health Sciences using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) Inventory. Method: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted from March 1st, 2022 to September 30th, 2022. All medical students at Dow University of Health Sciences were offered to participate. All students were given the choice to respond to DREEM questionnaire via online Form or printed copy anonymously. The DREEM Inventory measures five domains of students’ perceptions of a given institution. Comparison of responses between different years and institution was carried out by χ2 test. Means scores were compared by Student’s t-test and ANOVA, p-value of ≤.05 was taken as significant. Results: Total of 1054 out of 1750 (60.23%) students submitted fully completed forms and were included, out of these 632 (60.0%) belonged to Dow Medical College & 422 (40.0%) belonged to Dow International Medical College. The mean ±SD of total score of DREEM by DMC students was 100.07 ±31.46 and that of DIMC was 100.52 ±32.73. According to DREEM Global scoring both colleges scores fell into category of “many problems”. Analysis according to domains showed that maximum score was given to 2nd domain of their “perception regarding teachers” and minimum score was allocated to 5th domain regarding “social self-perceptions”. Conclusion: Overall Students perceived environment at DUHS as “many problems” category. Health science students are the future healthcare workforce. Understanding and fostering a sustainable educational environment (EE) is essential in optimising their learning and the successful completion of their studies. A convergent mixed-methods study was conducted to explore health science students’ experiences of their EE at the largest public university in Brunei Darussalam. A cross-sectional design using the DREEM questionnaire (n = 150) and four focus group discussions (n = 31) involving five health science programs (biomedical sciences, dentistry, medicine, nursing/midwifery, and pharmacy) was conducted between November 2021 and May 2022. Descriptive and linear regression analyses and thematic analysis were respectively performed on the quantitative and qualitative data. Although the university EE was experienced by students as “more positive than negative” (86.7%), 13.3% perceived it as having “plenty of problems”. This perception of learning was statistically significant among nursing/midwifery students (p = 0.012). Dentistry students reported positive perceptions across all five domains of the DREEM (an overall mean of 119.3 ± 10.3). The importance of a stimulating home learning environment, supportive peers, innovative teaching methods, soft skill development, and clinical learning enhancement were highlighted. To foster independence and student-centred learning, an educational program that empowers students on their EE, including ‘survival skills’ is recommended. Future research should compare health science students’ experiences in university and clinical EE, nationally and abroad (medical and dentistry twinning program), and develop indicators measuring the sustainability of the EE throughout health science programs.
