Spanish Version of the Avoidance-Endurance Questionnaire: Factor Structure and Psychometric Properties

Abstract: To analyze the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the Spanish adaptation of the AEQ, and to validate it by reporting relevant pain-related variables, which were not investigated in the original study. One hundred and fifty Spanish patients diagnosed with chronic back and neck pain were referred by physicians from different pain clinics in Spain; all the patients filled out the questionnaires at their clinic. A series of principal components analyses (PCA) was performed to develop the Spanish ve… Show more

“…Variables that show positive correlation with AB have negative correlation with EB and vice versa. These results are consistent with two previous studies [ 6 , 7 ]. However, correlations between EB and pain intensity, pain catastrophizing and anxiety were not significant, which was attributed to the sample characteristics.…”

“…The primary measure of FAR and ER is the Avoidance-Endurance Questionnaire (AEQ) consisting of cognitive, emotional, and behavior responses [ 6 ]. Studies on AEQ confirmed that all responses were divided into FAR and ER and have good internal consistencies [ 6 , 7 ]. Both FAR and ER have several subscales: for example, in behavior response, FAR consists of avoidance of social activities scale (ASAS) and avoidance of physical activities scale (APAS) and ER consists of humor/distraction scale (HDS) and pain persistence scale (PPS).…”

“…In this study, all the subscales had acceptable to good internal consistency (α>0.7) similar to Parraga et al study. [ 31 ] The test–retest reliability was reported high except for 3 endurance responses (TSS, HDS,) which had moderate ICC. These results consisted of An et al article but the ICC which they reported was less and their study did in subjects with chronic pain (low back pain, fibromyalgia) but this study was done in subjects with CNSNP.…”
