Spanish otter trawl fisheries in the Cantabrian Sea

Abstract: Punzón, A., Hernández, C., Abad, E., Castro, J., Pérez, N., and Trujillo, V. 2010. Spanish otter trawl fisheries in the Cantabrian Sea. – ICES Journal of Marine Science 67: 1604–1616 A non-hierarchical classification technique (clustering large applications, CLARA) was used to identify four fishing tactics of Spanish otter trawlers in the Cantabrian Sea (ICES Division VIIIc) from 1983 to 2004: mixed fishing, blue whiting fishing, horse mackerel fishing, and mackerel fishing. There were no significant differenc… Show more

“…The higher abundance of Anisakis sp. at the AC may also be associated with the higher fishery efforts at this locality (Rodríguez‐Cabello et al ., ; Punzón et al ., ) compared with the GB (Piñeiro et al ., ). Fishing pressure has been shown to have a negative effect on the diversity and abundance of parasites with complex life cycles (Wood & Lafferty, ).…”

“…Alternative approaches such as Partitioning Around Medoids (PAM) algorithm (Duarte et al, 2009) and an extension of this for large datasets, CLARA (Clustering LARge Applications) (e.g. Punzón et al, 2010;Castro et al, 2010Castro et al, , 2011 have been used in recent studies. However, as cautioned by Castro et al (2010), the CLARA algorithm samples subsets of the overall data matrix.…”

“…In contrast to the North Sea, the Irish Sea and northern Bay of Biscay, where Nephrops is one of the most important fisheries, in the southern Bay of Biscay N. norvegicus has stopped being a target species over time due to its low abundance. Nevertheless, it is a valued component of the mixed bottom trawl fishery together with hake, anglerfish, megrim, horse mackerel, mackerel and blue whiting (Fariña and Herraiz 2003, Punzón et al 2010, ICES 2012. The Nephrops stock is declining in the study area (Fariña and Herraiz 2003) and recovery plans were adopted in 2005 (Council Regulation (EC) 2166/2005.…”
