National discourses about US Latinos, immigration, and Spanish have proliferated in the United States over the past two decades, ebbing and flowing in both quantity and vitriol, as Chavez (2008:34) points out, with global and national economic conditions, the broader political climate, and the demand for cheap labor. These discourses construct US Latinos, both immigrants and the US-born, as Spanish monolinguals, unable or unwilling to learn English, who, "flood," "invade," or "infect" the US (Santa Ana 2002), depleting local budgets and draining resources from cities, states, and the nation. En las variedades contemporáneas de español, la coexistencia de las formas verbales simples subjuntivas en -ra y -se es desigual y existe una preferencia generalizada por la primera. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el avance de -ra y la decadencia de -se en el español peninsular de los siglos XVIII y XIX para entender su trayectoria evolutiva. A partir de casos extraídos del Corpus Diacrónico del Español (CORDE), del Corpus Hispánico y Americano en la Red: Textos Antiguos (CHARTA), del Oralia diacrónica del español (ODE), del Corpus de Documentos Españoles Anteriores a 1900 (CODEA+2022) y del Portal de Archivos de Españoles (PARES), se ha realizado un análisis estadístico descriptivo e inferencial de la frecuencia de aparición de -ra y -se en relación con variables lingüísticas (valor, oración, sujeto y frecuencia léxica) y extralingüísticas (periodo y tipo textual). Los resultados muestran una notoria extensión de -ra en el siglo XIX, especialmente en documentos que representan situaciones comunicativas orales, como los particulares y jurídicos, lo que nos ayuda a entender por qué en el español contemporáneo -se se percibe como variante más formal (Moreno Fernández, 2016; NGLE, 2009, 457, entre otros).

Latino English varieties, especially Mexican American English (henceforth MxAE), have received a considerable amount of research over the past six decades. In spite of that, they are still poorly understood in most respects. The reasons are numerous: most of the research has consisted of studies of limited scope, a fair amount of it was published in obscure venues, the issues of Spanish maintenance and of code switching often seem to overshadow Latino English in research efforts, Latino communities are widely dispersed across the United States, and there is a host of social issues that complicate exploration of Latino language varieties even as they enrich it. One aim of this book is to help rectify the weak understanding of Latino Englishes and MxAE.We cannot aspire to answer every possible question about Latino Englishes or even MxAE by itself. No study could address the entire myriad of such issues. In addition to clarifying issues regarding Latino Englishes, however, a second aim we aspire to accomplish is to draw scholarship on Latino Englishes into the more general body of research on language transfer and new dialect formation. To do so, it is necessary to take a primarily linguistic perspective, with the development of linguistic variables as the primary focus. Several groundbreaking studies, notably Mendoza-Denton (1997, 2008), Fought (1999, 2003), and Eckert (2008b, have taken a micro-variation approach, examining how patterning of specific linguistic variables in Latino communities is intricately tied to interpersonal networks and individuals' identity construction. These studies have provided vital insights. Here, however, we focus on the language as a whole and how it evolves from a collection of interference features to a stable dialect.
