Spacecraft state propagation and orbit determination using jet transport

Abstract

The motion of space objects is strongly nonlinear and non-integrable since it is not only affected by the Keplerian central gravity of the Earth, but also subjected to some complex perturbations. Either an accurate and efficient closed-form analytical solution or numerical integration solution is hard to obtain due to the rapid time-varying characteristics of the dynamics. As an alternative, some useful methods, such as covariance analysis and unscented transformations, have been developed at the cost of accuracy loss. There is no doubt that Bayesian orbit estimators based on these state transition methods would inherit the weaknesses. That is, the problem is either a bad prediction accuracy or a low computational efficiency. To alleviate this dilemma, a set of nonlinear propagators and estimators have been developed. In particular, this thesis proposes a specific polynomial algebraic software Jet Transport (JT), which enables to perform the precise and efficient Taylor or Chebyshev polynomial algebra and its implementation in nonlinear state propagators and estimators.
 An efficient polynomial operation tool has been proposed. This tool defines a series of polynomial algebraic manipulation in a modern computer, such as polynomial storage, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, differentiation, integration, composition, polynomial-based integrators and polynomial evaluation. In overall, the methodology provides an efficient and accurate way to calculate arbitrary order Taylor and Chebyshev polynomials for practical problems defined by nonlinear functions or ordinary differential equations.
 Efficient and accurate spacecraft trajectory propagations are put forward. An advanced Monte Carlo method is constructed by combining high order polynomial propagators with the polynomial evaluation at real vectors. The former technique employs either Taylor or Chebyshev polynomials to approximate the flow of the dynamics, while the latter one is used to transport state vectors in a neighborhood of an initial state to determine statistical distributions.
 A JT-based augmented high order extended Kalman filter is proposed (JT-AHEKF). Since the JT-AHEKF filter employs high order Taylor expansions to achieve the a priori prediction of the state and measurement vectors, it enables to extract more nonlinear information from the models, such that both spacecraft trajectories and associated parameters are estimated accurately, even considering large state deviations or sparse measurements. A standard JT-based high order extended Kalman filter is deduced (JT-HEKF) by degrading the JT-AHEKF filter without consideration of parameter estimation.
 To avoid the pollution of false measurements, three fault-tolerant strategies have been presented for the JT-HEKF filter. These practical strategies are proposed based on either the direct abandon of identified false measurements or the adaptive adjustment of measurement noise covariance matrices using a single scale factor and an adaptive scale matrix.
 An adaptive order-switching strategy tailored for the JT-HEKF filter (JT-OSHEKF) has been proposed. Although, to a great extent, the JT-HEKF filter reaches a superior balance between the computational accuracy and efficiency, its continuous usage in a whole estimation process can be uneconomic since a JT-HEKF filter might be not necessary at the filter steady stage. A specific algorithm has been designed to dynamically switch the filter order within one single run, making the filtering process even more efficient.
 To conclude, this thesis proposes a set of nonlinear state propagators and estimators using polynomial expansion techniques, whose high efficiency and accuracy have been tested in propagation and estimation problems involving geosynchronous trajectories. Note that these propagators and filters can be not only applied in practical space missions, but also employed to achieve the state prediction and estimation in general engineering problems. Expressions analítiques o solucions numèriques, precises i eficientsm són difícils d'obtenir per les característiques de la dinàmica. Com alternativa, històricament s'han desenvolupat mètodes útils basats en l'anàlisi de la covariança i transformacions no biaxades (unscented) al preu de perdre precisió. Els estimadors d'òrbita Bayesians, basats en mètodes de transició d'estat, hereden aquestes febleses. Això fa que el problema, plantejat en aquests termes, pateixi de poca precisió en la predicció, o d'una eficiència computacional baixa. Per a alleugerir aquest dilema s'han desenvolupat un conjunt d'integradors i estimadors no lineals. En particular la tesi proposa un sofware específic (el de jet transport (JT)) basat en àlgebra polinomial, que permet implementacions basades en expansions de Taylor o Txebyshev aplicades als problemes de propagació i estimació. Es proposa una eina d'openracions polinomials eficient. L'eina defineix una sèrie de manipulacions algebràiques adaptades a ordinadors moderns i incloent, enmaguetzematge de polinomis, adició, substracció, multiplicació, divisió, diferenciació, integració, composició i avaluacions. En resum, es proveeix una manera pràctica, eficient i precisa per a calcular expansions de Taylor o de Txebyshev a ordre arbitrari, per a problemes definits per funcions no lineals o per equacions diferencials ordinàries en vàries variables. Es presenten propagadors eficients i precisos i es construeix una metodologia de Montecarlo al combinar-los amb una avaluació eficient de vectors. És a dir, s'usen expansions de Taylor o Txebyshev per a aproximar el flux de la dinàmica i el transport dels vectors d'estat en un entorn d'un punt base per a determinar distribucions estadístiques mitjançant avaluacions polinòmiques. Es proveeix un filtre de Kalman augmentat d'ordre elevat (JT-AHEKF). Aquest filtre, basat en les expansions anteriors, permet extreure més informació no lineal dels models, de tal forma que, la trajectòria i al mateix temps diferents paràmetres associats, es poden estimar de manera precisa, inclús en casos de desviacions grans respecte de l'estat inicial o amb mesures escasses. El filtre de Kalman clàssic /EKF) es pot veure com un cas particular dels filtres de Kalman a ordre alt (JT-HEKF) desenvolupats, degradant-los a primer ordre. Mentre que la família JT-HEKF l'entendrem com els JT-AHEKF sense tenir en compte l'estimació de paràmetres adicionals. Per a evitar la pol.lució del filtre o mesures fallides per a filtres JT-HEKF, es presenten tres estatègies robustes, basades en la detecció i rebuitg de la mesura fallida, i en un escalat adaptatiu de les matrius que mesuren la covariança del soroll usant un únic factor d'escala. Es desenvolupa també una estratègia adaptativa de control d'ordre per la família JT-HEKF, anomenada JT-OSHEKF. Malgrat que els filtres JT-HEKF assoleixen nivells ja prou bons d'eficiència respecte el cost computacional, l'ús continu d'un filtre d'ordre elevat no es l'òptim, sobretot en etapes estacionàries. Per això s'h dissenyat un algorisme específic que ajusta l'ordre de manera dinàmica dins el mateix cicle de funcionament, fent així el procés encara més eficient. En resum, la tesi proposa un conjunt d'integradors i estimadors basats en tècniques d'expansions polinomials, l'eficiència i precisió de les quals s'ha testejat en problemes relacionats amb òrbites geosíncrones. Cal notar però que tots els propagadors i filtres desenvolupats no només es poden aplicar a la pràctica de missions espacials, sinó que també es poden usar per a la predicció d'estat en problemes molt generals d'enginyeria.
