As the goals of air transport shift towards more-electric or all-electric airplanes, different drive train configurations have been explored recently. A major goal on the way towards the inclusion in commercial air traffic is high reliability. One of the experimental electric airplanes is NASA’s X-57 “Maxwell”, which consists of fourteen electric motors powered from a battery pack. The aim of this paper is to assess the reliability of the proposed design of the X-57 by using the Lz-transform approach, as well as to propose several alternative designs to its electric drive train, in order to use less vehicle mass on the motors and more on the battery pack, without sacrificing the original availability and expected performance, with a final goal to increase the flight range. The reliability analyses show that the replacement of X-57’s three-phase motors with six-phase ones greatly improves availability of the electric drive train due to the use of fault-tolerant electric machines. Additionally, all of the further proposed alternative designs have higher availability than the X-57. The alternatives with CHB inverter topologies generally achieved higher availability values and higher expected performance than the B6 variants. Finally, the use of a distributed propulsion system with smaller take-off motors leads to a motor-mass advantage compared to more conventional drive train designs.

Space vector pulse-width modulation, SVPWM, algorithms for cascaded H-bridge multilevel, CHB ML, inverter usually provide the possibility of using several combinations of active voltage vectors to generate the same output voltage vector. For pre-selected Hbridges, some of them may generate output voltages opposite to the assumed direction. This results in the change of the dc-link voltages of these H-bridges in the opposite direction to the assumed direction in the ordering algorithm. Consequently, these algorithms are characterized by undue constraints and narrow possibilities of dc-link voltage balancing. In the proposed control algorithm, CHB ML inverter is treated as groups of successively activated three-level inverters; depending on the length of the reference voltage vector. These 3-level inverters consist of 3 H-bridges selected from each phase. The proposed extended selection method enables firmgrip control of the dc-link voltages. For a given direction of phase currents, the possibility of using H-bridges with lowest and highest dc-link voltages is simultaneously analyzed. Additionally, each of the three-level inverters is controlled by one of 3 proposed alternative modulation methods for which both the attainable output voltage vectors and unbalanced dc-link voltages are predicted. Simulation and experimental results confirm the correctness of the algorithm execution.

This study presents the structure and the space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) for power electronic transformer (PET) based on two seven-level cascade H-bridge (CHB) inverters. The DC links of CHB inverters are coupled with nine dual-active bridge (DAB) converters with medium-frequency transformers. The DC-link voltages are equalised with two methods-through the control of DAB voltages and through the modulation strategy applied to both CHB inverters. In the proposed SVPWM, the influence of vector sequences on predicted DC-link voltages is analysed, and the optimum vector sequence is selected to equalise them. Regardless of this, the proposed SVPWM strategy enables the proper generation of output voltage vector also in the case of DC-link voltage imbalance-the calculation of the space-vector area takes into consideration the inequality of the DC-link voltages and its influence on the lengths and positions of active vectors. To simplify the modulation algorithm, the multilevel CHB inverter is considered as a set of three-level inverters connected in series. Each of them is controlled using the same SVPWM algorithm. The proposed modulation method reuses the H-bridges with zero duty cycles determined in the initial stages of the output voltage generation process. This enables the optimal management of the DC-link voltage distribution. The experimental research was carried out on a 600 kW/3.3 kV PET. The results are presented in this study.
