Space charge, nonlinear resonances, and beam loss

Abstract: The effect of space charge in bunches stored for many synchrotron oscillations combined with the nonlinear resonances in a storage ring may create a particle diffusion to large amplitudes and eventually create unwanted beam loss. We review and discuss the mechanism which creates beam loss with the focus on how to estimate the number of particles that will be crossed by the stable fixed lines generated by a coupled resonance and space charge.
