Space charge effects in Fourier transform mass spectrometry. II. Mass calibration

Abstract: A new relatlonshlp between Ion mass and effective cyclotron frequency Is derived for Ions stored In a cublc cell and detected by uslng Fourler transform mass spectrometry. An assessment of colllslonal damping on mass measurement error Is also made. I t Is concluded that frequency perturbation by colllslonal damping, whlle predlcted by the model, Is negllglble at sufflclently low pressure. The mass callbration law is tested at a magnetlc fleld of 1.2 T by uslng major fragment Ions of 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane. … Show more

“…Product ions were allowed to cool before frequency-sweep excitation followed by broadband detection. The time-domain transient signal was baseline corrected, Hanning apodized, zero-filled, and Fourier transformed to produce a magnitude-mode frequency spectrum that was converted to a mass-to-charge ratio spectrum by the quadrupolar approximation [43,44]. Data acquisition was performed by use of a Predator data station [45] and data analysis with MIDAS 3.21 software.…”

“…Because of the presence of internal calibrants in each acquired mass spectrum, both external and internal calibrations were used for comparison. External calibration was performed using the widely adopted calibration equation [59]:…”

“…However, the mass accuracy in an FTICR experiment depends crucially on the number of ions used for the measurement [9,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. When online separations are used, the analyte ion production rates vary widely, and the ion population in the trap cannot be easily or precisely controlled.…”

“…This calibration law (Eq 1) was originally derived by Ledford et al [11] using results from Jeffries et al [12] and McIver and coworkers [13]. According to this derivation the second term, B/f 2 , accounts for both the DC trapping field and the influence of the space charge.…”
