Space charge distributions in insulating polymers: A new non-contacting way of measurement

Abstract: A new technique for the determination of space charge profiles in insulating polymers is proposed. Based on the evolution of an existing thermal wave technique called Focused Laser Intensity Modulation Method ((F)LIMM), it allows non-contact measurements on thin films exhibiting an internal charge to be studied. An electrostatic model taking into account the new sample-cell geometry proposed was first developed. It has been shown, in particular, that it was theoretically possible to calculate the internal char… Show more

“…Generally, after charging, an evaluation for charging effects is necessary, which is generally based on a measurement of the charge profile in terms of the density and temporal evolution of trapped charges including surface charge and space charge. The measuring methods usually employed in investigating of the insulation aging and failure mechanism of polymer materials [28,33,34], however, are complicated and unsuitable for our purpose. Hence, as an alternative, we designed a simple measuring procedure as schematically shown in Figure 2b for statistically assessing charging effects.…”

“…When measurement time is long enough, the decay of |Eac(t)|, that is the temporal evolution of trapped charges, which relates to a discharging/detrapping process of electric charges [27], also can be observed. It should be noted that although this procedure is simple in operation, the detailed knowledge about the mobility, trapping depth and distribution states of space charge in PI tubing is still not clear, which may be obtained by means of other sophisticated methodologies, e.g., the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) or the laser induced pressure propagation (LIPP) techniques [33,34,35,36]. However, these are out of our research scope.…”
