Space-charge-based electrostatic plasma confinement involving relaxed plasma species

Abstract: A numerical study is reported on the equilibrium properties of a surface-emitted or edge-confined non-drifting plasma. A self-consistent finite-differences evaluation of the electrostatic potential is carried out for a non-neutral plasma that follows a Boltzmann density distribution. The non-neutral plasma generates an electrostatic potential that has an extremum at the geometric center. Poisson's equation is solved for different ratios of the non-neutral plasma size to the edge Debye length. The profiles of t… Show more

“…The exact structure of the reflecting boundary used to confine an electron plasma along its edge was not considered in Ref. 16. A charged particle trap based on a cylindrical generalization of the planar ASB configuration considered here may lead to a method for confining a non-neutral plasma along the plasma's edge.…”

“…Electrostatic potential profiles of non-neutral plasmas containing oppositely charged species have been previously computed using similar methods in multiple trap geometries with uniform magnetic fields 2,3 and no magnetic field. 4 The effects of incorporating magnetic mirrors on non-neutral plasma confinement in Penning traps have been studied analytically, 5 using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, 6,7 and experimentally. 5,7 The results from the current study show correspondence with the previous analytical and PIC results.…”
