Space and time in masking and crowding

Abstract: Masking and crowding are major phenomena associated with contextual modulations, but the relationship between them remains unclear. We have recently shown that crowding is apparent in the fovea when the time available for processing is limited, pointing to the strong relationship between crowding in the spatial and temporal domains. Models of crowding emphasize the size (acuity) of the target and the spacing between the target and flankers as the main determinants that predict crowding. Our model, which is bas… Show more

“…As previously mentioned, when investigating how time influences contrast sensitivity, we found an increase in contrast sensitivity as a function of the longer presentation time of the target for both normally sighted and IN subjects, consistent with previous studies 24,84 . However, whereas IN continued to improve in contrast sensitivity up to the longest presentation time of 480 ms in the poor eye, normally sighted subjects reached saturation at earlier times and under all conditions.…”

“…It certainly appears that collinear facilitation (SM) is dependent on stimulus duration. At 3λ, Lev & Polat (2015) found no facilitation with a 30 ms stimulus duration. Cass & Spehar (2005) found little facilitation at 20 ms, but robust facilitation with a 40 ms stimulus duration.…”

“…In a recent comprehensive paper exploring the relationship between lateral masking and crowding, Lev & Polat (2015) suggest that participants with lower "contrast thresholds" (i.e. higher facilitation) may have longer integration times as a result of reduced levels of inhibition.…”

“…Masking refers to the reduction in visibility of a (target) stimulus when it is presented in close spatiotemporal proximity to another (mask) stimulus (Breitmeyer & Ogmen, 2006). Masking and crowding are affected similarly by certain spatiotemporal properties of the stimuli such as stimulus onset asynchrony and duration (Chung et al, 2001; Lev & Polat, 2015); however, they also have distinct characteristics (Chung et al, 2001; Pelli, Palomares, & Majaj, 2004). …”
