Financial literacy is becoming increasingly important, in particular for adolescents since they are exposed to financial services earlier and earlier. At the same time, empirical studies indicate that male learners show higher financial literacy than women; however, other studies find significant or contrary differences between male and female learners. These partially contradictory results make it necessary to investigate such gender-specific effects in more detail. This article addresses two questions to contribute to the literature on financial literacy: first, in which financial content areas are there significant performance differences between female and male adolescents? Secondly, does the relationship between learning opportunities and financial education differ among pupils? The analyses are based on a sample of 530 secondary students from Germany. The results indicate that female students show higher test results for the financial literacy dimensions money and payments, and insurance, male students perform better regarding the dimensions savings and monetary policy. Furthermore, learning opportunities may contribute differently to the gender gaps. We contribute to the literature by investigating the important question of gender gap for five different dimensions of financial literacy and by showing that different learning opportunities play a role in the development of students’ financial literacy.

“…Even though the concept of social role continues to be encountered in sociological literature today, the most fervent discussions of it largely came to an end during the 1970's [Haug 1972;Jackson 1972;Joas 1973;Griese -Nikles -Rülcker 1977;Wiswede 1977;Biddle in 1979], in good measure because other approaches and topics pushed interest in it to the sidelines. This change was not merely a temporary shift in the tides of sociological fashion but reflected a deeper change, namely the rejection of holistic, structural functionalist ideas of the human individual as a more or less passive and conformist performer of structural requirements and functional imperatives, and a re-orientation toward the concept of the human actor as an autonomous, separate and independent being who decides and acts on the basis of knowledge, preferences and rationality, following interests, aims and objectives.…”

Abstract:The present article follows the themes treated in "The Society of Individuals: How to Solve the Dilemma of Individualism and Holism in Historical Sociology" published in the journal Historická sociologie No. 1/2015. Its primary topic is social roles, a theme actively discussed in sociological literature from the 1950s to the 1980s but afterwards largely neglected because the concepts of individual human actors (agents) and their actions (agency) pushed the topic of roles to the sidelines. This article tries to show that despite this intellectual shift, the theme of social roles deserves attention even today, and in particular that the concept of "role playing" can be useful in sociological theory to resolve the seemingly irreconcilable opposition of individualistic and holistic approaches.

Wieviel Kultur steckt in der Literatur? Bemerkungen zum Weltverhältnis des Literarischen Die folgenden Überlegungen haben zum Ziel, aus der Logik der literarischen Darstellung heraus Grundsätzliches über das Verhältnis der Literatur zum kulturellen Kontext abzuleiten, in dem sie erzeugt wird und in dem sie zugleich doch nicht einfach aufgeht. Ich werde dafür in einem ersten Schritt danach fragen, auf welche Weise wir den Kulturbegriff sinnvoll fassen können, um dann in einem zweiten Schritt zu überlegen, was vor dem Hintergrund dieses Begriffs von Kultur die m.E. besondere kulturelle Leistung der Literatur ist. Der Umfang des Textes und die dazu gegenläufige Weite des Themas führen dazu, dass ich sehr schematisch argumentieren werde und alle historischen bzw. systematischen Subtilitäten und Komplexitäten zum großen Teil beseite lasse. Ebenso aus den Augen lasse ich die intensive Forschungsdiskussion um den Kultur-oder Literaturbegriff. 1 Alle diese Einschränkungen haben den Vorteil, das gelehrte Drumherum einmal beiseite lassen zu dürfen, um sich auf wesentliche Bestimmungen des Themas zu konzentrieren, ohne sie selbst gleich wieder fragend relativieren zu müssen. Ich möchte mit zwei eng zusammenhängenden, sehr geläufigen und zugleich weitestmöglichen Definitionen des Kulturbegriffs beginnen, die ich aber für unzureichend, weil für zu unspezifisch halte. Die eine hat Sigmund Freud 1927 in seinem Buch "Die Zukunft einer Illusion" auf den Punkt gebracht. Die Illusion, die Freud hier meint, und um deren Zukunft es gehen soll, ist übrigens die Religion, eine der großen Kulturleistungen, an der man gleich die Ambivalenz der Kultur in den Augen Freuds studieren kann: Freud spricht von ihr als einer Technik, "den Wert des Lebens herabzudrücken und das Bild der realen Welt wahnhaft zu entstellen, was die Einschüchterung der Intelligenz zur Voraussetzung hat." (Freud 1994:51) Zur Kultur scheint also irgendwie eine Doppelbewegung zu gehören: Ermöglichungsraum von individueller und kollektiver Freiheit auf der einen, Beschränkungs-und Unterdrückungsunternehmen auf der anderen Seite. In diesem Zusammenhang gibt Freud auch seine Definition von Kultur: Menschliche Kultur sei "all das, worin sich das menschliche Leben über seine animalischen Bedingungen erhoben hat und worin es sich vom Leben der Tiere unterscheidet." (Freud 1993:110) Diese Definition verfährt als eine rein negative: Kultur ist das am Menschen, was nicht mehr tierisch ist. 2 30 Jahre lang war das Heilige Römische Reich deutscher Nation Schauplatz eines ursprünglich als Konfessionsstreit geführten Krieges zwischen Protestanten und Katholiken, der später zu einem Kampf um dieVormachtstellung in Europa wurde. Die Erschließung dieses historisch-politischen Hintergrundes 6 ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung für ein adäquates Verständnis der barocken Literatur, nicht nur der bekannten Beispiele-Grimmelshausens "Simplicissimus" (1668) oder Opitz' "Trostgedichte in Widerwertigkeit des Krieges" (1633).
