Purpose Sustainable animal food systems are increasingly important to society. Yet for pork, the most consumed meat product in Europe, there is no social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) in the literature. The breath and complexity of social issues and lack of data makes the task challenging. This study examines the risk of negative social impacts in Swedish pork production systems and includes workers, farmers, consumers, local community, society, and pigs as stakeholders. Methods The objective was to assess the risk of negative social impacts for the production and consumption of 1000-kg pork (fork weight—bone free meat including cooking losses) originating from two different systems: organic and conventional pork production. Relevant social sustainability issues for pork production systems were identified through a literature search and a consultative workshop with experts. A life cycle inventory was conducted to collect data for activity variables and compute Social Risk (SR), a measure of the risk of negative social impacts related to a reference (here the average European social conditions). Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) was used to obtain weights for subcategories. The SR scores and the weights were used to calculate Social Risk Time (SRT) that relates the Social Risk to the functional unit by considering the ‘exposure’ to the risk, and the Social Hotspot Index (SHI), which relates the SRT to the worst possible situation for that system. Results and discussion The conventional pork system had 42% of inventory indicators with SR > 0.5 and the organic pork system had 32%. For all stakeholders, the pig farm had the largest SRT in both production systems except for workers in the organic pork system where the soybean farm had the largest SRT. In the conventional pork system, society as well as farmers at the pig farm had SHI > 0.5 slightly, meaning performing the same as European average. In the organic pork system, SHI < 0.5 for all stakeholders and subsystems. Conclusion Swedish pork production has lower risk of negative social impacts than the average European social conditions for most of the stakeholders: workers, pigs, local community, and consumers. Farmers and society at the subsystem pig farm have the same risk of negative social impacts as the average European social conditions. Due to the dependence of the results of the chosen reference level, the reliance on certification, and the indicators included, results should be interpreted and used with care.

Potential blockchain applications in logistics and transport (LSCM) have gained increasing attention within both academia and industry. However, as a field in its infancy, blockchain research often lacks theoretical foundations, and it is not clear which and to what extent organizational theories are used to investigate blockchain technology in the field of LSCM. In response, based upon a systematic literature review, this paper: (a) identifies the most relevant organizational theories used in blockchain literature in the context of LSCM; and (b) examines the content of the identified organizational theories to formulate relevant research questions for investigating blockchain technology in LSCM. Our results show that blockchain literature in LSCM is based around six organizational theories, namely: agency theory, information theory, institutional theory, network theory, the resource-based view and transaction cost analysis. We also present how these theories can be used to examine specific blockchain problems by identifying blockchain-specific research questions that are worthy of investigation.

Effects of center pivot sprinkler fertigation on the yield of continuously cropped soybean

Continuous cropping is a common agricultural practice in Northeast China. Focusing on soybeans cropped continuously for two consecutive years, this article fully explores the effects of the amount of water, fertilizing rate, and fertilizing method on the growth and yield of soybean. Specifically, an orthogonal experimental plan was designed involving these three factors. Each factor was divided into three levels: the amount of water was set as 52.62 mm (W1), 73.41 mm (W2), and 138.6 mm (W3); the fertilizing rate was set as 6.75 kg/hm2 (N1), 9.75 kg/hm2 (N2), and 13.5 kg/hm2 (N3); and the fertilizing method was set as center pivot sprinkler (CPS) fertigation (F1), microspray (MS) fertigation (F2), and MS fertilizing + CPS spraying and leaching (F3). During the experiments, the growth traits at each growth stage were monitored, and the soybean yield was measured. The following results were obtained through the analysis of the experimental data: the amount of water significantly affects the growth traits of soybean in the early stage of growth; the fertilizing rate greatly affects the stem diameter; and the fertilizing method is a major influencer of soybean yield. The highest yield (2811.88 kg/hm2) was observed in zone 4 (W2N1F2). This means irrigation and fertilization are very important to the normal growth of continuously cropped soybean; the yield loss induced by continuous cropping can be mitigated effectively through timely and adequate irrigation and topdressing, plus fertilization by the suitable method. To prevent yield loss, farmers in Northeast China are suggested to replace continuous cropping with crop rotation. If continuous cropping is unavoidable, foliage fertilizer should be sprayed timely for topdressing at the flowering and seed-filling stages.
