“…At each station, two types of digisondes, namely, the Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI) and the Digital Portable Sounder 4D (DPS‐4D), perform routine ionospheric vertical sounding. Concurrent operation has shown that these two digital ionosondes employ different antenna arrays and digital signal processing techniques yet nevertheless are closely related instruments [ Morris et al , ]. More detailed description about the CADI and DPS‐4D ionosondes can be found in the relevant literature [e.g., MacDougall et al , ; Reinisch et al , ].…”

“…The echoes of the signal reflected by the ionosphere provide a profile of reflection frequency versus virtual height (the ionogram), which need to be inverted to give the electron density (directly related to the reflection frequency) profile as a function of actual height (Piggott and Rawer, 1972). Correct scaling of the returned data is difficult due to the lack of reliable models of the high-latitude ionosphere; several studies have compared different types of ionosonde (Romano et al, 2004;Morris et al, 2003), in an effort to improve scaling. Several different types of ionosondes are in use by various scientific communities such as the Digital Portable Sounder, DPS-4 (Haines and Reinisch, 1995), the KEL42 (Kelly, 1981), and the CADI (MacDougall, 1997) and a number of other ionosondes are in operation for IPY in both hemispheres.…”

“…The pulse compression technique using phase codes increases the SNR and range resolution for the low‐power transmission (Coll & Storey, ; Reinisch, ; Yao et al, ) as a long duration coded pulse contain the same energy content as a high power short duration pulse, and the received pulse can be compressed. Therefore, coherent integration and pulse compression are means of improving the SNR (Bianchi et al, ; Bibl, ; Reinisch, ; Morris et al, ). The 1 V peak‐to‐peak coded signal is provided as input to the HPA unit for amplification and feeding to the transmit antenna.…”
