“…3 in Robinson et al, 2004). That said, however, the two hypotheses are equally parsimonious only in the case where the genus Amblysomus is sister to a clade that groups all other golden moles, which although feasible, would conflict with all previously published classifications based on morphology (Roberts, 1951;Ellerman et al, 1953;Meester et al, 1986). Based on these considerations we posit that hypothesis (i) is more likely than hypothesis (ii), and that the large pericentric heterochromatin regions observed in chromosomes homologous to CAS1-5, 10 and X of all Amblysomus spp.…”

“…Similarities between the two genera include the lack of talonids on the lower molars (Roberts, 1924(Roberts, , 1951 and the absence of vesicular bullae on the head of the malleus (Broom, 1907). It is, however, not clear whether these characters are plesio-or apomorphic within Chrysochloridae, and a sister relationship between Calcochloris and Eremitalpa has consequently never been proposed, hence their placement in different taxonomic categories (Ellerman et al, 1953;Simonetta, 1968;Petter, 1981) in the most recent classification of golden moles (Bronner and Jenkins, 2005). Given the current lack of evidence in support of a close relationship between these genera, a definitive statement on which of the two phylogenetic interpretations of the CAS7 and 13 fusion accurately reflects the natural situation must await the generation of a well resolved molecular phylogeny for chrysochlorids.…”

“…First, given the apparent morphological differentiation (Roberts, 1951;Ellerman et al, 1953;Petter, 1972) among the seven currently recognized southern African subspecies (Meester et al, 1986), and the sometimes marked geographical discontinuities distinguishing many populations, molecular measures of divergence might be expected to reveal regional genetic differences between populations. Secondly, as deep divisions in an infraspecific phylogeny represent a major source of gene pool diversity within a species (Avise, 1992), our investigation has clear conservation implications.…”

“…Interfemoral membrane is red-brown, speckled with black irregular spots, and sparsely haired near body (Kingdon 1974). Wing membranes are dichromatic with an orange-red to red to red-brown background that is speckled with irregular blackbrown to black spots (Ansell 1960;Ellerman et al 1953;Gray 1866;Kock 1967;Stuart and Stuart 1988). Variability in color may be due to alcohol preservation or age (Kock 1967).…”
