[1] It is shown, by numerical modeling, that the recent deformation pattern observed in the northern Apennines, mainly characterized by progressive eastward migration and bowing of the belt, thrusting activity along its external front, and tensional tectonics in the internal area, can be reproduced, at a first approximation, by applying a belt-parallel (SE-NW) compression to the chain, which is simulated as a structural system characterized by a high mechanical strength and decoupled from the surrounding zones. The above compressional regime, obtained by imposing kinematic boundary conditions to the model, causes the outward escape of crustal wedges from the chain, in particular the northeastward displacement of the Romagna-Marche-Umbria Units and the counterclockwise rotation and northwestward displacement of the Ligurian Units. This kinematics produces compressional to transcompressional strain along the external front of the chain and tensional to transtensional strain in the internal area, in line with the observed features that concern both strain style and orientation of principal strains. Evidence and arguments supporting the kinematic boundary conditions and the model parameterization adopted in modeling are discussed. Numerical experiments have also been carried out to evaluate the influence of major features of the model parameterization and boundary conditions we have adopted in modeling and to provide insights into the possible influence of strong decoupling earthquakes in the central Apennines on tectonic and seismic activity in the northern Apennines.

A merged, high-quality waveform data set from different seismic networks has been used to improve our understanding of lateral seismic attenuation for Northern Italy. In a previous study on the same region, Morasca et al. (2008) were able to resolve only a small area due to limited data coverage. For this reason the interpretation of the attenuation anomalies was difficult given the complexity of the region and the poor resolution of the available data. In order to better understand the lateral changes in the crustal structure and thickness of this region, we selected 770 earthquakes recorded by 54 stations for a total of almost 16000 waveforms derived from seismic networks operating totally or partially in Northern Italy. Direct S-wave and coda attenuation images were obtained using an amplitude ratio technique that eliminates source terms from the formulation. Both direct and early-coda amplitudes are used as input for the inversions and the results are compared.Results were obtained for various frequency bands ranging between 0.3-25.0 Hz, and in all cases show significant improvement with respect to the previous study since the resolved area has been extended and more crossing paths have been used to image smaller scale anomalies. Quality-factor estimates are consistent with the regional tectonic structure exhibiting a general trend of low attenuation under the Po Plain basin and higher values for the western Alps and northern Apennines. The interpretation of the results for the Eastern Alps is not simple, possibly because our resolution for this area is still not adequate to resolve small scale structures.Response to Reviewers: Dear Dr. ZahradnikBelow is our response to the two reviewers' comments and we have uploaded both the revision and another copy with highlighted changes. Progressive offset and surface deformation along a seismogenic blind thrust in the Po Plain foredeep (Southern Alps, Northern Italy)

Here we present, for the first time in the Po Plain foredeep (Northern Italy), the middle to late Pleistocene growth history of an outcropping secondary fold and related faults, whose progressive deformation over an intermediate time window (10 5 years) is driven by an underlying seismogenic blind thrust. We trenched and logged an outcropping decametric secondary anticline, related to a deeper blind compressional structure, which deforms fluvial sediments and an overlying loess-paleosol sequence. Folded units were dated, using radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence methods, to the late Pleistocene-Holocene and tentatively correlated with glacial-interglacial phases occurring during the time interval from marine isotope stage 6 to the present. A multistep retrodeformation of the fold allowed us to calculate uplift rates for this secondary and shallow anticline, varying between 0.02 and 0.1 mm/yr since circa 200 kyr. Trishear forward deformation modeling of the fold indicates that the amplification of the observed fold could be caused by two shallow thrusts formed through a break-backward activation. This generated a decametric surface fold whose most recent growth was associated with bending-moment normal faulting in the crestal and forelimb region. Our observations demonstrate that near-surface compressive tectonics can be caused by blind thrusting, via a complex array of fault and folds: upward strain propagation and generation of shallow low-angle thrust and related folding seem to be mainly due to secondary fold-related faulting, according to an out-of-syncline thrusting mechanism.
