South–South research collaboration of countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)

Abstract: This study investigates South-South collaboration in research, and specifically collaboration among the 15 countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as well as between the SADC and the rest of Africa. It was found that only 3% of SADC papers during 2005-2008 were jointly authored by researchers from two or more SADC countries (intra-regional collaboration), and only 5% of SADC papers were jointly authored with researchers from African countries outside the SADC (continental collaboration).… Show more

“…More recently, a number of such studies include developing countries in general (Arunachalam and Viswanathan 2008) and African countries (Boshoff 2009;Sooryamoorthy 2009) in particular. Sooryamoorthy (2009) investigated the collaboration patterns of South African researchers and Boshoff (2010) identified the collaborative patterns in the Southern African development community (SADC) countries. Onyancha and Maluleka (2011) found out that knowledge production through collaborative research among sub-Saharan African countries is minimal.…”

“…These benefits notwithstanding, Africa is said to be contributing only a small percentage towards global knowledge production and impact (Adams et al 2010;Arvanitis et al 2000;Boshoff 2009;Narvaez-Berthelemot et al 2002;Onyancha and Ocholla 2007). For instance, Adams et al (2010, p. 10) summarize their findings in the Global Research Report thus: Africa's ''volume of activity remains small, much smaller than is desirable if the potential contribution of Africa's researchers is to be realized for the benefit of its populations''.…”

Boshoff (2009) notes that sub-Saharan Africa's share of world scientific papers was 1% in 1987 and has continued to decrease to stand at 0.7% in 1996. As a whole, Africa's world share of scientific papers was 1.8% between 2000 and 2004 (Pouris and Pouris as cited in Boshoff 2009).…”

“…Some have explored the collaborative dimensions hidden in such scientific publications [10][11][12]. As far as South African engineering research is concerned, there are a few relevant studies.…”
