Cadre de recherche : L’article porte sur les parcours d’anciens travailleurs contractuels venus du Mozambique en République démocratique allemande (RDA) dans le cadre d’accords bilatéraux entre 1979 et 1990. La fondation d’une famille était interdite à ces jeunes adultes lors de leur séjour, par définition limité et dédié uniquement au travail et à la formation. Après la chute du mur de Berlin, seule une minorité d’entre eux est restée en Allemagne. Pour certains, les constellations familiales ont joué un rôle décisif dans l’obtention d’un permis de séjour. Objectifs : L’article tend à éclairer les impacts de ces dispositifs spécifiques à la guerre froide sur les parcours individuels, et en particulier sur les stratégies destinées à « faire famille ». Méthodologie : Cette recherche qualitative en cours se base sur des récits de vie recueillis lors d’entretiens narratifs avec d’anciens travailleurs vivant en Allemagne aujourd’hui. Trois études de cas ont été choisies pour examiner, à titre d’exemples, les façons de « faire famille » dans ce dispositif spécifique du travail contractuel. Résultats : Cette comparaison montre que l’interdiction de fonder une famille n’a été à long terme un obstacle pour aucun des trois enquêtés. Plusieurs stratégies ont été observées, comme le fait de déplacer la fondation d’une famille au Mozambique pendant la phase de travail contractuel ou reporter la fondation d’une famille en Allemagne à la période qui a suivi la résiliation des contrats, soit à partir de 1990. Conclusions : Les structures familiales ainsi construites s’inscrivent dans de nouveaux espaces sociaux transnationaux co-construits par les enquêtés, qui s’entremêlent entre le Mozambique et l’Allemagne, ce qui favorise chez leurs enfants une appartenance multiculturelle et engendre de nouvelles formes de mobilité nord-sud. Contribution : Cette approche permet de mettre en lumière des biographies d’anciens travailleurs mozambicains, dans le cadre de leur séjour en RDA, mais aussi dans une perspective plus large couvrant l’ensemble de leur parcours, de leur enfance jusqu’à nos jours.
