Sources of variance in daily physical activity levels as measured by an accelerometer

Abstract: These findings provide insight for understanding the behavioral variability in the activity patterns of adults and suggest that reliable measures of activity behaviors require at least 7 d of monitoring.

“…Objective methods measure physiological outcomes, like metabolic cost, heart rate and body temperature, 20,24 or biomechanical effects, like acceleration and displacement, associated with physical activity. 20,[24][25][26] They generally provide a reliable assessment of physical activity; 27 however, because of the need for expensive tools, they have limited applicability in large studies.…”

“…The Actigraph also has been found to be effective at detecting bouts of activity, including both continuous and intermittent bouts [33]. Participants, regardless of treatment arm, wore monitors for 3 days at each time-point, including 1 weekend day, since at least 3-4 days of monitoring is needed to achieve 80% reliability in the variance of activity by participant [39]. Participants reported minutes of activity in the moderate, hard, and very hard range.…”

“…Data sampling was usually performed over 3 days. Measurement should be done over a period of at least 1 week, including the weekend, during which subjects tend to be less active, to obtain reliable measurements of physical activity 19) . It should thus be noted that, since the present data were obtained over 3 days during which the subjects were relatively active, the data might not directly reflect the overall physical activity and the actual activity might have been lower.…”
