Sources of Validity Evidence for Educational and Psychological Tests

Abstract: This study investigates aspects of validity reflected in a large and diverse sample of published measures used in educational and psychological testing contexts. The current edition of Mental Measurements Yearbook served as the data source for this study. The validity aspects investigated included perspective on validity represented, number and kinds of sources of validity evidence provided, overall evaluation of the favorability of the test, and whether these factors varied as a function of the type of test. … Show more

“…If a supposedly unidimensional scale turns out to have a two-dimensional structure in a given study, then this affects the interpretation of the scale's internal structure. Note that factor-analytic evidence can be considered to be evidence of internal structure (Cizek, Rosenberg, & Koons, 2008). Therefore, we recommend that factor-analytic evidence should be presented first when assessing the internal structure of a scale.…”

“…In this paper, external aspect of validity evidence is focused upon, which deals with "convergent and discriminant evidence" (Messick, 1995, p. 745). More recently, Cizek et al (2008) examined various aspects of validity from previously published indicators. They discussed validity including the traditional division of construct validity evidence (convergent and discriminant evidence), criterionrelated evidence, content evidence, evidence based on response process, evidence based on consequences, face validity evidence and evidence based on internal structure, supporting the need for various forms of evidence.…”

“…First, reliability and validity are difficult, complicated concepts understood by few of their users and misunderstood by many [13]- [15]. Second, very often only reliability is reported in the literature.…”

“…We believe that three sources of validity evidence for the interpretation of student performance on exams can be examined relatively easily: face validity evidence, evidence based on content validity, and evidence based on internal structure [8], [15]. This is one more than the modal number of sources commonly reported in research articles aimed at establishing the sound psychometric properties of achievement, psychological, and counseling tests [15].…”
