Sources of the oxygen isotopic anomaly in atmospheric N2O

Abstract: [1] One-dimensional and two-dimensional models are used to investigate the isotopic composition of atmospheric N 2 O. The sources of N 2 O in the atmosphere are based on recent laboratory measurements of the N 2 O quantum yield in the mixture of O 3 /O 2 /N 2 (Estupiñán et al., 2002). Two recently proposed pathways (Estupiñán et al., 2002;Prasad, 2005) are evaluated in the model. We find that the new atmospheric sources constitute a few percent of the total N 2 O source, but can account for $50-100% of the

“…Hence similarly, if one can get an improved understanding for F str from, for example, extensive mid-tropospheric measurements58, F sur can be better determined. We expect the utilization of multiple tracers (such as N 2 O) obtained by the CARIBIC project58 along with Δ 17 O in CO 2 and a global model454664 could place a strong constraint on the strength of the cross-tropopause exchange, in particular with the use of the correlation of Δ 17 O and [N 2 O] in the upper troposphere. The uniqueness of Δ 17 O and [N 2 O] lies on their chemical properties in the atmosphere: both are inert in the free troposphere but significantly altered in the stratosphere45475964.…”

“…Oxygen isotopic compositions are reported as δ 17 O and δ 18 O. To be consistent with previous work [ Miller et al , 2005; Liang et al , 2006, 2007; Liang and Yung , 2007], we define them here as …”
