Phytobiocides are a good alternative to chemicals in managing bacterial diseases including bacterial wilt of tomato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. In the present research study, finely ground dried powders of seven widely available medicinal plants/weeds species viz., Peganum harmala (esfand or wild rue), Calotropis procera (sodom apple), Melia azedarach (white cedar), Allium sativum (garlic), Adhatoda vasica (malabar nut), Tagetes patula (marigold) and Nerium oleander (oleander) were assessed for their anti-microbial activity, both in-vitro (10% w/v) and in-vivo (10, 20, 30, and 40 g/kg of potted soil) against R. solanacearum. Aqueous extracts (prepared as 10% w/v, soaking for 48-72 h and filtering) of C. procera, A. vasica, and T. patula inhibited the in-vitro growth of the bacterial pathogen over 60% of that produced by the standard antibiotic streptomycin. A. sativum, N. oleander and P. harmala aqueous extracts were less effective while M. azedarach showed no effect against R. solanacearum. The higher dose (40 g/kg of soil) of C. procera, A. vasica and T. patula decreased disease severity quite effectively and increased yield and plant growth characters as much as the standard antibiotic did. No phytotoxicity of medicinal plants powder was observed on tomato plants. Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and terpenoids were detected in the aqueous extracts of T. patula and A. vasica whereas C. procera was found to have only alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. Our data suggest that dried powders of T. patula, C. procera and A. vasica (40 g/kg of soil) could be used as an effective component in the integrated disease management programs against bacterial wilt of tomato.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is an important disease in cultivation of chili pepper, causing plant death and significant yield losses. Cultivation of disease-resistant varieties is the most suitable measure to control bacterial wilt of chili pepper. To establish an efficient screening method for resistant chili pepper to R. solanacearum, six resistant or susceptible cultivars to the R. solanacearum were selected and the development of bacterial wilt on the cultivars according to several conditions was investigated. Drenching bacterial suspension into the cut roots using a scalpel was more simple and effective to distinguish resistant and susceptible cultivars than inoculation methods of root-dipping or soil-drenching without wounding. A resistant pepper, 'MC4' to R. solanacearum showed high resistance under the developed conditions which were 21-to 28-day-old pepper inoculated with 1×10 8 cfu/ml of bacterial suspension. On the other hands, the susceptible cultivars represented high disease severity under the conditions. These results indicated that we developed an efficient method to evaluate resistance of chili pepper cultivars against bacterial wilt. In addition, we successfully evaluated resistance degree of 140 commercial chili pepper cultivars to R. solanacearum using the developed method.

Over the last 25 years, a breeding line of pepper (Capsicum spp.) PVR Subi has been bred by the introduction of the Phytophthora capsici resistance found in pepper line PI201234 and the field resistance to viruses found in pepper accession KC00406 into a small-fruited, earlymaturing, and good-tasting land race, Subicho, in Yeongyang. In 2009, PVR Subi was crossed with a new version of Subi (New Subi) and an accession, KC01522, with mild and good dry fruit quality. This was done to meet growers' demands for larger-fruited, open-pollinated local cultivars adapted to conditions in the Subi area of Yeongyang. Twenty-nine F5 and 37 F6 lines that developed from the two crosses were evaluated for resistance to P. capsici by pathogen inoculation at the seedling stage. Selected lines were grown to record horticultural characters in F5 and to analyze chemical quality components such as capsaicinoids, sugar and color in F6. Most of the breeding lines carried pathogen resistance comparable with the commercial resistant hybrid control cultivar, 'Baerota', and many lines were found to contain higher capsaicinoid and sugar levels, as well as ASTA color value, than the commercial control. All the breeding lines were identified as restorer-of-fertility lines with N(S)RfRf genotype, producing stable male fertile F1 plants in crosses with a cytoplasmic male sterile line (CMS). These breeding lines are promising as basic materials for selection of open-pollinated cultivars adapted to grow in Yeongyang, and as pollen parents for a hybrid seed production system using cytoplasmic male sterility.
