Sources of Change for Modern Knowledge Organization Systems

Abstract: Knowledge Organization Systems (e.g. taxonomies and ontologies) continue to contribute benefits in the design of information systems by providing a shared conceptual underpinning for developers, users, and automated systems. However, the standard mechanisms for the management of KOSs changes are inadequate for systems built on top of thousands of data sources or with the involvement of hundreds of individuals. In this work, we review standard sources of change for KOSs (e.g. institutional shifts; standards cyc… Show more

“…Cooperative development of KOSs is one of the important trends that can impact the endeavor that has been traditionally done by a group of specialists (cf. Lauruhn and Groth, 2016). However, the studies on these conceptual structures require not only methods relevant to the traditional KOSs but also approaches that can reveal the social and cultural context of their development and usage.…”

“…Wikipedia articles about pandemic-related objects and phenomena and Wikidata have been a subject of research from many other perspectives, including a KO standpoint. Lauruhn and Groth (2016) emphasized that the crowdsourcing method of the construction of KOS, such as in the case of Wikipedia, can be considered one of the sources of change in KOS development and maintenance. According to them, future KOSs will be developed in a hybrid way, including both information professionals and social contributors or software agents.…”

“…Many in the community have brought forward evidence of the need for a repository of KOSs that can allow observation across space and time. Tennis (2002;2007;2012; has been the most prominent catalyst for the KO community, joined by Fox (2016), Lauruhn and Groth (2016), Lee (2016), Salah et al (2012), , Scharnhorst and Smiraglia (2012) and Smiraglia et al (2013). Such an observatory would be a place where one might find:…”

“…The need to understand how KOSs adapt to changes in knowledge, particularly over time, has been identified as an important question for research in knowledge organization (Gnoli 2008;Lauruhn and Groth 2016;;Scharnhorst et al 2016;Tennis 2012 and2016). The problem of schema evolution is not new, and is not unique to NHMs (see Roddick 1992; see also Gao and Zaniolo 2012b;Brahmia et al 2015a and b;Galante et al 2005;Gao and Zaniolo 2012a).…”
