Abstract. The adaptation of some benthic foraminiferal species to low-oxygen conditions provides the prospect of using the chemical composition of their tests as proxies for bottom water oxygenation. Manganese may be particularly suitable as such a geochemical proxy because this redox element is soluble in reduced form (Mn 2+ ) and hence can be incorporated into benthic foraminiferal tests under low-oxygen conditions. Therefore, intra-and inter-test differences in foraminiferal Mn/Ca ratios may hold important information about short-term variability in pore water Mn 2+ concentrations and sediment redox conditions. Here, we studied Mn/Ca intra-and inter-test variability in living individuals of the shallow infaunal foraminifer Ammonia tepida sampled in Lake Grevelingen (the Netherlands) in three different months of 2012. The deeper parts of this lake are characterized by seasonal hypoxia/anoxia with associated shifts in microbial activity and sediment geochemistry, leading to seasonal Mn 2+ accumulation in the pore water. Earlier laboratory experiments with similar seawater Mn 2+ concentrations as encountered in the pore waters of Lake Grevelingen suggest that intra-test variability due to ontogenetic trends (i.e. size-related effects) and/or other vital effects occurring during calcification in A. tepida (11-25 % relative SD, RSD) is responsible for part of the observed variability in Mn/Ca. Our present results show that the seasonally highly dynamic environmental conditions in the study area lead to a strongly increased Mn/Ca intra-and inter-test variability (average of 45 % RSD). Within single specimens, both increasing and decreasing trends in Mn/Ca ratios with size are observed. Our results suggest that the variability in successive single-chamber Mn/Ca ratios reflects the temporal variability in pore water Mn 2+ . Additionally, active or passive migration of the foraminifera in the surface sediment may explain part of the observed Mn/Ca variability.

The Roseobacter group and SAR11 clade constitute high proportions of the marine bacterioplankton, but only scarce information exists on the abundance of distinct populations of either lineage. Therefore, we quantified the abundance of the largest cluster of the Roseobacter group, the RCA (Roseobacter clade affiliated) cluster together with the SAR11 clade by quantitative PCR in the southern and eastern North Sea. The RCA cluster constituted up to 15 and 21% of total bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes in September 2005 and May 2006, respectively. At a few stations, the RCA cluster exceeded the SAR11 clade, whereas at most stations, SAR11 constituted higher fractions with maxima of 37%. In most samples, only one RCA ribotype was detected. RCA abundance was positively correlated with phaeopigments, chlorophyll, dissolved and particulate organic carbon (POC), turnover rates of dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs), temperature, and negatively correlated with salinity. The SAR11 clade was only correlated with POC (negatively, May) and with DFAA turnover rates (positively, September). An abundant RCA strain, 'Candidatus Planktomarina temperata', was isolated from the southern North Sea. This strain has an identical 16S rRNA gene sequence to the dominant RCA ribotype. Detection of the pufM gene, coding for a subunit of the reaction center of bacteriochlorophyll a, indicates the potential of the isolate for aerobic anoxygenic photosynthesis. Our study shows that a distinct population of the RCA cluster constitutes an abundant bacterioplankton group in a neritic sea of the temperate zone and indicates that this population has an important role during decaying phytoplankton blooms.

Concentration gradients in the solid fraction and pore water of modern sediments allow to identify benthic biogeochemical processes and the associated fluxes. Gradients are often obtained from layers sampled below the sediment–water interface from sediment cores. Numerous examples in the literature show results from cores collected in impermeable porous sediments, but very few from permeable sediment cores. Indeed, the acquisition of vertical profiles in sandy permeable sediments with a spatiotemporal resolution equivalent to that of muddy sediments is a challenge. We present here a simple protocol that allows sampling of sandy sediments and their interstitial waters with a vertical resolution of 1 cm. This method is suitable for shallow environments, such as intertidal zones, lakes, lagoons, and stream beds. The method is based on rapid conditioning of hand‐collected cores. The cores are pre‐cut lengthwise. Immediately after recovery, they are laid horizontally, opened, and sliced. Interstitial water is collected by centrifugation on site shortly after cutting the core with tubes equipped with a 0.2 μm membrane. Optimally, 30 min is sufficient between core collection and conditioning of 12 sections of a 20‐cm long core. The examples shown indicate that the method is reproducible. Reduced dissolved compounds such as Fe(II), Mn(II), and NH4+ show profiles without significant oxidation. At the time of core cutting, small volumes of pore water are seeping out of the core, but for sediments with a permeability of up to 10−10 m2, this seepage does not disturb the shape of the pore‐water profiles.
