“…Firstly, the integration interval was based on constant raw counts of 44 Ca as an indicator of calcite ablation and on constant Sr/Ca ratios, as the intrashell heterogeneity of Sr/Ca in foraminifera in general and of A. tepida in particular is known to be relatively small (e.g. Eggins et al, 2003;de Nooijer et al, 2014a). Secondly, each laser ablation profile was screened for peaks in elements that may indicate surface contamination ( 27 Al, 57 Fe, 66 Zn).…”

“…Secondly, each laser ablation profile was screened for peaks in elements that may indicate surface contamination ( 27 Al, 57 Fe, 66 Zn). Typically, high concentrations of Mn on the outer and inner shell surfaces are considered an indicator of contamination (Marr et al, 2011;de Nooijer et al, 2014a;Leduc et al, 2014;Koho et al, 2015). In our case, where Mn is the element of interest, whenever peaks of Mn on outer and inner parts of profiles corresponded to peaks of other contaminant elements, they were discarded from our data.…”

“…Filters were rinsed with distilled water to remove salt and kept frozen at À20 1C until analysis as described in the study by Lunau et al (2006). Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were determined as described in the study by Dellwig et al (2007). Concentrations of DFAA were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography after ortho-phthaldialdehyde precolumn derivatization as described in the study by Lunau et al (2006).…”
