Air samples were collected concurrently at four sites using stainless steel canisters in a science park in central Taiwan. The airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were then analyzed using a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Eighteen volatile organic compounds (C 1 -C 8 ) in six hydrocarbon groups were identified. Measurements reveal that the three dominant species were 2-butanone (8.60 ± 0.98 ppbv), toluene (6.13 ± 1.67 ppbv), and acetone (6.03 ± 2.79 ppbv), while most other species were present at a concentration of below 1.00 ppbv. On average, the most abundant hydrocarbon group was ketones (56.95%), followed by aromatic compounds (27.75%), alkanes (8.33%), fluoroalkanes (3.40%), chloroalkanes (2.47%), and nitrile compounds (1.10%). Principal component analysis (PCA) identified two components PC1 and PC2. Ten species in PC1 and eight species in PC2 had loadings of greater than 0.8, suggesting that the emission sources of PC1 were related to high-tech industries and traffic, and those of PC2 were related to fugitive emissions of organic solvents and refrigerants.

The concentrations of 18 atmospheric carbonyls species were measured at Nan-Chie and Hsiung-Kong sites in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, during the summer and winter of 2006. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were the most abundant carbonyls with respective annual mean concentrations of 17.99 μg/m 3 and 13.69 μg/m 3 at Nan-Chie, and 21.47 μg/m 3 and 16.68 μg/m 3 at Hsiung-Kong; altogether the two species accounted for approximately 56-57% of total carbonyls. In summer, the total concentrations of carbonyls were 74.06 μg/m 3 and 89.99 μg/m 3 at Nan-Chie and Hsiung-Kong, respectively. In winter, the concentrations were 37.14 μg/m 3 and 46.50 μg/m 3 at Nan-Chie and Hsiung-Kong, respectively. Measured results indicated the predominance of photolysis and photooxidation reactions of aldehydes in summer. In this study, receptor models using principal component analysis (PCA) and absolute principal component scores (APCS) suggest that the primary pollution sources at Nan-Chie in the summer were secondary emissions/vehicle exhausts (gasoline engines)/stationary emissions (food industry), stationary emissions (petrochemical)/waste treatment and restaurant emissions; the primary pollution sources at Nan-Chie in winter were vehicle exhausts (gasoline engines)/stationary emissions (petrochemical) and restaurant emissions. At Hsiung-Kong, the primary pollution sources in summer were secondary emissions/vehicle exhausts (gasoline engines and diesel engines)/stationary emissions (metal assembly), restaurant emissions and others; the primary pollution sources in winter were vehicle exhausts (gasoline engines)/restaurant emissions and vehicle exhausts (diesel engines)/stationary emissions (metal assembly).

“…Note that the reason why we did not choose a ratio (such as ethylene/acetylene) to reduce the effects of vehicular emissions was that the vehicular exhaust in the studied area was too weak. Chang et al [55] showed that trans-2-pentene, cis-2-pentene, and acetylene are mainly derived from vehicular exhaust due to incomplete combustion, and they are widely used as the denominators [56]. However, these VOCs concentrations were too low to be used as denominators in our study.…”

Due to the development of industrialization and urbanization, secondary pollution is becoming increasingly serious in the Yangtze River Delta. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are key precursors of the near-surface ozone, secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and other secondary pollutants. In this study, we chose a serious ozone pollution period (01 May–31 July 2017) in Jinshan, which is a petrochemical and industrial area in Shanghai. We explored the VOCs distribution characteristics and contribution to secondary pollutants via constructing a regional network based on wind patterns. We determined that dense pollutants were accumulated at adjacent sites under local circulation (LC), and pollution from petrochemical discharge was more serious than industry for all sites under southeast (SE) wind. We also found that cyclopentane, o-xylene, m/p-xylene, 1-3-butadiene, and 1-hexene were priority-controlled species as they were most vital to form secondary pollutants. This study proves that regional network analysis can be successfully applied to explore pollution characteristics and regional secondary pollutants formation.
