This article addresses the issue of VOC emissions from upholstery materials (natural leather) used for the manufacturing of upholstered furniture. The main intention of this paper is to compare VOC emissions released from different types of natural upholstery leathers. This research has assessed the impact of various factors (e.g. the organic origin of leather, the type of tanning, the type of upholstery leather and the leather finish etc.) on the amount of VOC emissions from natural leathers used for the production of upholstered furniture. 1 m 2 samples of natural leather were prepared for testing before being placed into a small test chamber (1 m 3 volume). VOC emission measurements were taken in a small test chamber with predefined conditions (an ambient temperature of 23ºC and 50% relative air humidity). With the use of sorbent Tenax TA were, the values of VOC emissions released by the test sample of different types of leather into desorption tubes was then recorded. VOC emissions were analysed in an Agilent GC 6890 N gas chromatograph using an Agilent 5973 Network mass spectrometer using cryofocusing, thermal desorption and a GC-MS data library (NIST 05). The analyses conducted provide qualitative and quantitative data regarding the concentration of selected VOC representatives measured in µg.m -3 . The quantitative difference in all emitted organic compounds is shown by the measured values of the TVOC parameter.

Air pollution in trains is an important factor threatening human health, which has attracted more and more attention in the worldwide public health researches. In this study, one cabin of a fully enclosed train was taken as an example to conduct experimental and numerical research on pollution level and distribution characteristic of total volatile organic compound (TVOC). The results show that when the average emission rate under daily environmental conditions was taken as the reference, TVOC concentration in the cabin exceeded the limit level of Chinese Indoor Air Quality Standard by more than 4 times. The obvious pollutants accumulative phenomenon could be found at bottoms and corners under the action of airflow. Setting air inlets at the roof of the train, mean age of air ranged from 30 s to 50 s in the breathing area. The concentration of pollutants was the lowest at 2.5-5 m from the center point of the cabin structure, and the ventilation efficiency was the highest. The introduction of clean fresh air could effectively eliminate pollutants. When the complete displacement ventilation rates were 51.4 h −1 and 28.6 h −1 , the removal efficiency of pollutants was about 0.85 and 0.48 mg/m 3 per minute, respectively. This study was helpful to the improvement and optimization design of air quality and ventilation mode in trains.

In order to further improve the interior air quality and comfort of the vehicle, CFD method is used to simulate the different airflow distribution caused by car-mounted air purifiers at different positions. Combined with the change of formaldehyde concentration field in car, the influence of car-mounted air purifiers on the formaldehyde dilution and removal under the condition of air conditioning air supply is analyzed. The simulation results are verified by actual measurement, and the trend of the simulation results is basically consistent with the measured results. When the car air purifier placed in the middle of the car roof, it can effectively dilute and purify the formaldehyde gas in the car, and reduce the concentration of formaldehyde in the breathing area of the driver and passengers. The adsorption and degradation of formaldehyde by the purifier, together with the dilution of formaldehyde by air supply, can improve the air quality in cars more effectively than using only one of the air purification methods.
