Source apportionment of PM10 in a north-western Europe regional urban background site (Lens, France) using positive matrix factorization and including primary biogenic emissions

Abstract: Abstract. In this work, the source of ambient particulate matter (PM10) collected over a one-year period at an urban background site in Lens (France) was determined and investigated using a positive matrix factorization receptor model (US EPA PMF v3.0). In addition, a potential source contribution function (PSCF) was performed by means of the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (Hysplit) v4.9 model to assess prevailing geographical origins of the identified sources. A selective iteration pr… Show more

“…The benefit of such approach was previously described Waked et al, 2014;Srivastava et al, 2017). In our case, we included hopanes (thereafter 25 named HOP), methoxyphenols, polyols (sum of mannitol, arabitol and sorbitol), levoglucosan and MSA (methane sulfonic acid).…”

“…Furthermore, in order to consider air parcels with a good representativity, a weighing function has been implemented to remove high CF uncertainties usually linked with low n ij values. The method implemented in ZeFir was based on a "trajectory density" log n ij + 1 (Bressi et al, 2014;Waked et al, 2014). Indeed, weighing function is empirically determined as…”

“…We calculated the PSCF on the basis of 5 × 5 • grid cells. To account for bad statistics in grid cells with a low trajectory density, a weighting function according to Waked et al (2014) was applied. The spatial distribution of the PSCF of N CN is mapped in Fig.…”
