Sorting Out the Cuckoo's Nest: A Factorial Survey Approach to the Study of Popular Conceptions of Mental Illness

Abstract: Research relevant to understanding how mental illness is popularly conceptualized owes much to the methods pioneered by Star in 1950. However, while her six vignettes have been used extensively over the last 30 years to test the public's ability to recognize mental illness, subsequent research has provided little insight into which factors contribute most to the judgment process. This study introduces a factorial survey research method that is more appropriate for the task. A sample of 143 college undergraduat… Show more

“…Clearly not all possible vignettes would be used in this study, but Rossi and Anderson (1982) state it is not necessary to use the entire universe of vignettes because a random sample of vignettes will contain properties of the vignette universe. For example, other scholars have used the vignette design and had a vignette universe of more than one-million while using only a small proportion of possible vignettes (Miller et al 1986;Thurman et al 1988). …”

“…2 (3) For the evaluation task different scales can be used. One may use categorical or rating scales (e.g., Dülmer, 2001;Mäs, et al, 2005;Schulte, 2002;Thurman, Lam, & Rossi, 1988). They are comparable to those used for standard questions.…”

“…In quantitative design, a series of predetermined responses will be made available to the respondents [59]. Although quantitative vignette studies have been used in various fields of application, including psychology [65][66][67] and sociology [68][69][70] and many others [63], to the best of the authors' knowledge there are no similar design and studies within the context of post-disaster housing recovery. Typically in vignette studies, subjects are confronted with the whole population of vignettes to elicit their behavior with regard to the presented vignette scenarios [63].…”
