Sorption/release of diclofenac sodium in/from free‐standing poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethyleneimine) multilayer films

Abstract: Polyelectrolyte multilayer films deposited onto various substrates have been used extensively as drug delivery systems. However, little attention has been paid to the release of drugs from free‐standing polymeric films. Herein, we report the construction of thermal crosslinked free‐standing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/branched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) multilayer films composed of 25 double layers [(PAA/PEI)25] and their use in sorption/release of diclofenac sodium (DS). The (PAA/PEI)25 multilayer films were char… Show more

“…Polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a stimuli-responsive synthetic polycation, possessing the highest content of amino groups per macromolecular chain (one amino group at each two methylene units), commercially available in a large variety of molar masses and chain structures (linear, branched, or hyperbranched). Because of these outstanding characteristics, PEI has become interesting for various potential uses, either as it is, or as a constituent in multicomponent materials (hydrogels, , composite nanoparticles, layer-by-layer thin films, , etc.). Examples of recent applications of PEI and PEI-based materials are as sensors for the detection of metal ions, , as drug delivery systems, , as antibacterial coatings, , or as catalysts .…”

However, the most important application of PEI is as gene delivery vector, where it is considered the golden standard in nonviral gene therapy. , …”
