Sorption and Mechanical Properties of Nitrile Rubber Compatibilized Natural Rubber—Poly (Ethylene-Co-Vinyl Acetate) Blends

Abstract: Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) has been used as a compatibilizer for natural rubber—poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (NR—EVA) blends, vulcanized by sulfur. A significant reduction in solvent uptake is observed for compatibilized samples. This has been explained in terms of the increased interfacial adhesion between NR and EVA components of the blends in the presence of the compatibilizer. The threshold compatibilizer loading has been found to be 6 phr. The observed sorption features have been complemente… Show more

“…Similar methodology has been reported elsewhere [31][32][33]. The weight loss was found to be proportional to time, area of the membrane, and the pressure gradience across the membranes (it can be considered zero outside the vials), while inversely proportional to the thickness of the membrane.…”

“…Vapor permeability was determined by measuring the weight loss of small vials containing permeant and tightly tied with the membrane of the NBR/NR blend. Similar methodology has been reported . The results of the experiments can be expressed by plotting the amount of vapour permeated, M t versus time t .…”

“…With the addition of EVA into the NR/NBRr blends, t 90 is longer than the NR/NBRr blends without EVA, which indicates that NR is the cure‐activating component in the blends. The longer t 90 values of NR‐rich compounds are due to the higher degree of unsaturation in NR compared with EVA .…”

“…It can be seen that the swelling percentage of NR/NBRr blends with EVA is lower than that of similar blends but without EVA. The reduction in solvent uptake by the blends with increasing EVA content in the majority of the blends has been attributed to the semicrystalline nature of EVA and increased interfacial adhesion between the blend component .…”
