This paper projects the potential of waste beer yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in biosorbing lead from battery manufacturing industrial effluent. Experiments were carried out as a function of pH, biosorbent concentration, lead concentration and agitation speed. Specific lead uptake of 2.34 mg/g was recorded and the data gave good fits for Freundlich and Langmuir models with K f and Q max values of 0.5149 and 55.71 mg/g. The roles played by amines, carboxylic acids, phosphates, sulfhydryl group and lipids in lead biosorption were studied. Electrostatic attraction may be the mechanism of biosorption. The extent of contribution of the functional groups and lipids to lead biosorption was in the order: carboxylic acids > lipids > amines > phosphates. Blocking of sulfhydryl group did not have any significant effect on lead uptake.

Abstract:The publication is a synthetic collection of information on the sorption properties of marine and freshwater algae. Kinetics and sorption equilibrium of heavy metals in algae-solution system, influence of abiotic factors on the process of sorption and desorption of analytes from biomass are discussed. In paper the results of laboratory tests conducted using different species and types of algae, which purpose was to assess their usefulness as natural sorbents, are described. The conclusions drawn from current research confirm the results from literature.

In present study, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to optimize Cd (II) uptake by Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass, the prediction model for Cd (II) uptake capacity using S. cerevisiae biomass was developed, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) implied the model was significant. The maximum absorbing capacity of 22.05 mg/g was predicted at 30 mg/L Cd (II), 0.8 g/L biomass, 28.57°C, pH 5.51 and 3.0 h of contact time using the desirability function. Both Langmuir and Freundlich equations are suitable for describing biosorption isotherm.
