Sorption and Biodegradation of 17β-Estradiol by Acclimated Aerobic Activated Sludge and Isolation of the Bacterial Strain

Abstract: Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption and biodegradation behavior of 17b-estradiol (E2) at low mg Á L À1 levels by acclimated aerobic activated sludge as well as the effect of temperature on the sorption and biodegradation. Results showed that E2 was completely transformed after 2 h under aerobic conditions. E2 attenuation was achieved by sorption onto the sludge and the subsequent biodegradation by micro-organisms in the activated sludge. Sorption of E2 onto both the inactivated sludge … Show more

“…The concentration of E2 and EE2 was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a fluorescence detector (Prostar; Varian), according to the method described by Zeng et al (2009b). A reversed-phase ODS Hypersil analytical column (250 mm · 4.6 mm, 5-lm particle diameter; from Thermo Electron Corporation) was used for the separation.…”

“…For example, 17b-estradiol (E2) can be used as sole carbon and energy source by Pseudomonas aeruginosa TJ1 isolated from an aerobic activated sludge (Zeng et al 2009). Bacteria within the family of Alcaligenaceae have been found to be able to use triclocarban as the sole carbon source (Miller et al 2010).…”

“…Ketoprofen, acetaminophen, 17β-estradiol and ibuprofen were previously reported to be degraded by the corresponding microorganisms such as Delftia tsuruhatensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Ibu-2 (De Gusseme et al, 2011;Iasur-Kruh et al, 2011;Murdoch and Hay, 2005;Zeng et al, 2009). On the other hand, pharmaceuticals are usually present in the level of µg L -1 or ng L -1 in wastewater systems, with some of them being toxic to the microorganisms.…”
