Estrogen in wastewater are responsible for a significant part of the endocrine-disrupting effects observed in the aquatic environment. The effect of sludge retention time (SRT) on the removal and fate of 17b-estradiol (E2) and 17a-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic activated sludge system designed for nutrient removal was investigated by laboratory-scale experiments using synthetic wastewater. With a hydraulic retention time of 8 h, when SRT ranged 10-25 days, E2 was almost completely removed from water, and EE2 removal efficiency was 65%-81%. Both estrogens were easily sorbed onto activated sludge. Distribution coefficients (K d ) of estrogens on anaerobic sludge were greater than those on anoxic and aerobic sludges. Mass balance calculation indicated that 99% of influent E2 was degraded by the activated sludge process, and 1% remained in excess sludge; of influent EE2, 62.0%-80.1% was biodegraded; 18.9%-34.7% was released in effluent; and 0.88%-3.31% remained in excess sludge. Optimal SRT was 20 days for both estrogen and nutrient removal. E2 was almost completely degraded, and EE2 was only partly degraded in the activated sludge process. Residual estrogen on excess sludge must be considered in the sludge treatment and disposal processes. The originality of the work is that removal of nutrients and estrogens were linked, and optimal SRT for both estrogen and nutrient removal in an enhanced biological phosphorus removal system was determined. This has an important implication for the design and operation of full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) consist of a variety of compounds extensively used for the treatment of human and animal diseases and for health or cosmetic reasons. PPCPs are considered as emerging environmental contaminants due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment and high environmental risks. In wastewater treatment plants using conventional activated sludge processes, many PPCPs cannot be efficiently removed. Therefore, there is an increasing need for more effective and cost-efficiency ways of removing PPCPs while treating wastewater. Algae-based technologies have recently attracted growing attentions for their potential application in wastewater treatment and hazardous contaminant removal, which are advantages in reducing operation cost while generating valuable products and sequestrating greenhouse gases at the same time. This work reviews the up-to date researches to reveal potential toxic effects of PPCPs on algae and algae-bacteria consortia, identify mechanisms involved in PPCP removal, and assess the fate of PPCPs in algae-based treatment systems. Current researches suggest that algae and algae-bacteria consortia have great potentials in PPCP removal but more works are required before algae-based technologies can be implemented in large scales. Knowledge gaps are identified and further research focuses are proposed in this review.

Pharmaceuticals could potentially pose detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health, with wastewater treatment being one of the major pathways for pharmaceuticals to enter into the environment. Enhanced removal of pharmaceuticals has been widely observed by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). However, the degradation mechanisms involved in pharmaceutical biotransformation were still ambiguous. In addition, pharmaceutical biotransformation models have not yet considered transformation products associated with the metabolic type of microorganisms. The overall objective of this thesis is to understand the contribution of different metabolisms by relevant microorganisms to the biotransformation of selected pharmaceuticals (i.e., atenolol and acyclovir) accompanied with the formation of their transformation products in an enriched nitrifying sludge, in terms of product identification, influencing factor assessment and mathematical modeling.Biodegradation of atenolol in an enriched nitrifying sludge was studied under different metabolic conditions. The positive link was observed between atenolol biodegradation and the cometabolic activity of AOB in the presence of ammonium, likely due to a broad substrate spectrum of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO). In the presence of ammonium, atenolol was transformed into P267 (atenolol acid) and three new products including P117(1-isopropylamino-2-propanol), P167 (1-amino-3-phenoxy-2-propanol), and an unknown product P227. However, atenolol was only transformed to P267 and P227 in the absence of ammonium. The formation of P117, P167 and P227 was further confirmed from follow-up atenolol acid biodegradation experiments in the presence of ammonium. Therefore, a tentative biodegradation pathway of atenolol is proposed in the enriched nitrifying sludge, consisting of two steps regardless of the presence of ammonium: i) microbial amide-bond hydrolysis to carboxyl group, producing P267 and ii) a possible formation of P227 and other two cometabolically induced reactions: iii) breakage of ether bond in the alkyl side chain to produce P117 and iv) a minor pathway through N-dealkylation and loss of acetamide moiety from the aromatic ring, yielding P167. An important insight was herein provided regarding the biotransformation pathways of pharmaceuticals under different metabolic conditions.To further assess the influence of the growth substrate on atenolol biotransformation in enriched nitrifying culture, different ammonium concentrations were applied constantly to study atenolol degradation kinetics and the biotransformation product formation dynamics.Higher ammonium concentrations led to the lower atenolol removal efficiencies probably II due to the substrate competition between ammonium and atenolol.
