Sonographic presentation of rice bodies in subacromial-subdeltoid chronic bursitis

Abstract: Background subacromial-subdeltoid chronic bursitis is one of the main causes of shoulder pain syndrome. There are various causes of shoulder pain syndrome including chronic bursitis. The sonographic appearances of chronic bursitis vary from patient to patient, depending upon the underlying cause. However, rice bodies are the rare sonographic presentation among them. Rice bodies can be associated with atypical mycobacterial tenosynovitis, bursitis, mycobacterium tuberculosis and infections, but ver… Show more

“…Metaplasia of subsynovial connective tissue into cartilage nodules is observed. Rice bodies are associated with tuberculous arthritis, osteoarthritis and infective arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis ( 6 ). Bursitis caused by NTM is thought to be a very rare presentation ( 7 - 9 ); thus, the optimal duration of antimicrobial therapy for bursitis caused by NTM is unclear.…”

“…Ultrasound has become a commonly used approach for shoulder disorder diagnosis and treatment. Bacha et al reported that ultrasound could be a reliable technology for chronic subacromial‐subdeltoid bursitis based on the unique features of rice bodies 15 . Moreover, ultrasound has been used for corticosteroid injections in patients with SIS 16 .…”

“…Patients have been explained the procedure and aim of the research and written informed consent was signed. American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) guidelines for shoulder ultrasound scanning were followed in this study [ 20 ]. Acromion-to-greater tuberosity distance was measured in the neutral position from the most prominent, from the palpable lateral margin of the acromion to the prominent superior facet of the greater tuberosity, while the elbow flexed at 90 degrees and hand is placed on the same thigh.…”
