Sonographic features of colon carcinoma seen with high‐frequency transabdominal ultrasound

Abstract: To assess the value of high-frequency ultrasonography as a diagnostic imaging procedure in patients with colon carcinoma, we first evaluated the sonograms of 37 patients who had been already diagnosed with contrast enema and/or colonoscopy as having colon carcinoma. As a result, the sonographic criteria for diagnosis of a possible colon carcinoma were (1) a localized and irregular thickening of the colonic wall with heterogenous low echogenicity, (2) an irregular contour, (3) a lack of demonstrable movement or… Show more

“…Richardson et al (33) obtained similar results, with a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 67%. On the contrary, Shirahama et al (34) obtained a specificity of 90%. In our study of 145 patients where 43 tumors were diagnosed, the levels of sensitivity are lower than those published previously (79%) and the figures for specificity are congruent with the study of Shirahama (92%).…”

“…The virtual colonoscopy (23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31) is also a good alternative, although its sensitivity in the detection of smaller lesions has not yet been sufficiently tested. The value of abdominal ultrasound in the diagnosis of CRC has already been established in various studies, however, all involving few patients (32)(33)(34)(35). Sonographic findings such as an irregular and hypoecoic thickening of the colon wall and an irregular contour, as well as the loss of stratification in layers of the wall, suggest the diagnosis (33).…”

“…The diagnostic criteria for CRC used were localized irregular wall thickening or a hypoechoic mass mixed with hyperechoic lesions (a pseudokidney sign) (8). The former is a common finding in patients with CRC (17), and the latter represents tumor tissue with air in the residual lumen (18).…”

“…During US screening of the abdomen, CRC is sometimes encountered (7). A thickened colonic wall has been reported as a criteria for the diagnosis of CRC (8). Changes in stratification and contour illustrated with abdominal US are associated with the depth of invasion, in either the subserosa or the extra subserosa (7).…”
