Sonographic Elastography of the Thyroid Gland

Abstract: SummaryThyroid gland disorders include benign and malignant thyroid nodules and diffuse thyroid disorders. The incidence of malignant thyroid nodules is low and the prognosis is good. The diagnosis of thyroid cancer and diffuse parenchymal disorders is generally based on clinical manifestations and histopathological evaluation. Ultrasonography has its place in the diagnostics and follow-up of thyroid disorders. Ultrasonographic elastography is a new, developing method that shows increase in clinical practice. … Show more

“…Instead of a single focal location, as in point SWE, multiple focal zones are interrogated in rapid succession, faster than the shear wave speed . The growing number of studies on thyroid shear wave imaging has provided encouraging results . However, the following limitations have been highlighted in the literature.…”

“…Unfortunately, this technique is still quite new and not widely used in clinical practice, so its universal adoption cannot be recommended by the guidelines, but there is important evidence of its clinical utility and its application in current practice is increasing. As any imaging technique, it holds its limitations [90].…”

“…Because tumours are 5-28 times stifer than normal surrounding tissue, qualitative elastography or strain ratio elasticity are techniques that may improve the diagnostic accuracy or monitoring of treatment eicacy [18,19].…”
