Sonographic appearance of an eccrine spiradenoma: A case report

Abstract: Eccrine spiradenoma is a rare, benign, adnexal skin tumor of the sweat gland, which may manifest in any part of the body. It is typically located in the dermal or the subcutaneous fat layer. Eccrine spiradenomas rarely progress to malignant transformation and only a few cases of malignant transformation have been reported. Due to its rarity, there have been few reports about the sonographic appearances of eccrine spiradenoma. We report the sonographic findings in one case of eccrine spiradenoma, located in the… Show more

“…Ultrasound evaluation of the mass generally reveals a smooth, lobulated mass in the superficial subcutaneous tissue. 4 The mass appears hypoechoic and often has increased vascularity. The classic MRI appearance is a T1-hypointense, T2-hyperintense mass, with homogeneous enhancement after contrast administration.…”

“…ES are small in size usually measuring 2-3 cm, however variable size range from 1 to 10 cm has been reported in literature. 2,4,5 On color Doppler, low resistance color flow may be seen in both periphery and central portion. On MRI, the mass demonstrates low signal intensity on T1 weighted images and intermediate to high signal intensity on T2 or short tau inversion recovery (STIR) weighted images.…”

“…3,4 In the existing literature, only a few studies have described the imaging features of ES. 2,5 Case Report A 32-year-old male presented to the orthopedic clinic with gradually progressive painful swelling on the medial plantar surface of midfoot. The patient reported that this lesion had been present for 3 years; however both pain and swelling had progressively increased over approximately 10 weeks prompting him to seek medical attention.…”

“…Recent reports have emphasized the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of eccrine spiradenoma 2 , 6 , 7 . Jin et al 6 reported a case of an eccrine spiradenoma and compared its ultrasound features with those of other sweat gland tumors in previous literature.…”
